Dogs and landing out....

Recommended Posts

So, first jump of the day with a buddie who the last time I jumped with smashed his femur into 7 pieces. 2nd to last out. King Air is at base of clouds at 11.5, cant see ground. Green light is still on, so we go. After an good HD jump with a couple spocks, we turn and burn. Looking down in a track, I think to myself, "Self......this terrain looks unfamiliar....maybe I should take a gander around.....hummmm....I dont see an airport.....this could be a problem" So I dump a bit high, at 3500. Of all the time for my canopy to open nice and slow, it snivels...... Stow slider, loosen chest strap and search for airport. I find it, but there is NO WAY IN HELL, I am going to make it back. Like miles away no way.

So all I can see are ditches, wires, asphalt, and fields that are mostly torn up right now with the growing season just starting, ie, big clumps of dirt from plowing.....not a good surface at all. I really really really dont want to land on the street dammit. I finally find a nice big yard at someones house that is perfect for a good landing, and hell, the wind is even going my way. I set up for a nice landing and with a 180 carve I'm just starting to skim turf........then I see him. Dog.....oh no....BIG dog.........PISSED DOG! Hes starts runnin for me and there is no way I can do shit about it now......if he runs in front of me......I'll cream him and myself too. But the funniest thing happened, as he got closer I think that the whole speed and canopy thing scared the SHIT outta him. He turns and runs like HELL outta there with his tail tucked TIGHT! Holy Jesus, I thought I was a chew toy, but ended up scaring the hell outta this dog.

So the owners come out and are cool folks, but the dog wouldnt get near me. I tell ya, that was the last thing that was in my mind when I decided to land there. "Am I going to be eaten by a dog if I land here?" I could just see that headline in the incidents forum......"Skydiver gets mauled off the DZ"

Good times.....

Reminds me of landing out back in the PC days. Landed in the yard of a farm about a mile away from the DZ and right after landing two big Dobermans come racing at me growling and snarling.

Well, oh shit, what to do? I had a metal rip cord in one hand and my hook knife in the other and planed to beat and slice them to death if needed:$ :S

Guess they saw my implements of death and had second thoughts because they stopped short and just looked at me while I made a quick exit.

Crap, was I scared.:o From then on I tried to stay away from houses if I was landing out.
The older I get the less I care who I piss off.

My partner landed in a field on the other side of the road. As far as the spot, out pilot is the plane and DZ owner. He uses a really nice expensive in dash GPS unit, so the spots are usually great. I trust him with the light, but maybe I will be a little more self reliant from now on when im in the back of the load.

Doggie biscuits sounds like a great idea. You can gross out the newbies and tandems by eating them on the plane.:D
