SkydivingNurse 0 #26 May 16, 2004 I have two, your basic Meade ETX-60AT, a nice little scope with GOTO and subpar optics; and a 8" Discovery dob. My telescopes are the only thing that make the winter bearable, some of the coolest sights come out in the winter months. Well, that and Great Lakes Christmas Ale . I've only ever tried a Messier Marathon once, and only bagged 20, but it was fun and I was talking to a cutie at the observatory. I'm looking into a solar filter for my dob to start observing sunspots. Hi. My name is Leonard, I am a geek, and I love it. (if it were me, I'd lean more toward the Celestron~computerized scopes are nice, but they can hamper your enjoyment of using star charts and becoming really familiar with the constellations and can find things without help~but that's just my $0.02)
Viking 0 #27 May 16, 2004 Do you regret getting the 8" dob instead of a 10" or 12"? for you solar filter, have you though about using a big peice of #14 welders glass?I swear you must have footprints on the back of your helmet - chicagoskydiver My God has a bigger dick than your god -George Carlin

winsor 236 #29 May 16, 2004 I have a Jason refractor and some kind of Jason reflector. I'm unclear on the nomenclature, so I voted for the first (and likely cheapest) reflector category. Starry skies, Winsor
SkydivingNurse 0 #30 May 16, 2004 I don't really regret getting the 8", the only other things I had at the time were a good pair of binoculars and a 60mm refractor, so the jump to that size was a considerable one. Also, the dob was pretty cheap. When I eventually get a better scope, I'm planning on going for one of the new Celestron goto scopes, something hopefully in the 12-14 inch range so I can start taking some serious astrophotography. The dob has been a load of fun, especially for planetary observations. Jupiter is incredible, Mars at it's closest approach was pretty darned cool, and I'll never forget my first good view of Saturn through it. It just sucks that it's such an expensive hobby. Viking 0 #31 May 16, 2004 Thats all i have right now too. But my refractor is back in Louisiana and it wasn't that good to begin with. I really want the 10" dob.
