Museums are cool. I like to go to the zoo though.

There has to be a section that is dedicated to the history of beer.

While Eloy is one of the centers of the skydiving world, putting a museum there makes about as much sense as putting a ski resort.

If ever there is a skydiving museum, it belongs in/near Washington D.C..

I have to disagree. Eloy has held a prominent place in skydiving history for almost 20% of modern skydiving history (1960-present). In addition the general central Arizona area has a storied past (Casa Grande, Coolidge, Marana).

There are certainly other places that have a valid claim to skydiving history such as Perris, Elsinore, and Muskogee. But DC is not one of them.

I have no idea if a museum is really planned or not but it needs to be where the skydivers are, not the politicians are.

And Eloy has about 0% attraction for a tourist spot to anyone not in the sport.

I know that before becoming a skydiver I had always dreamed of one day staying at the luxury resort known as the Toltec Inn. ;)

Central Arizona gets tens of thousands of winter visitors (snow birds) each year. They stay in garden spots like as Arizona City, Casa Grande and Coolidge. If you ever go to Skydive Arizona during the winter there are usually a couple hundred geriatrics out for the day, just watching the skydivers.

Again, I do not argue that Eloy is the best place for a museum. But it makes more sense than DC.

A museum is pointless if few people ever see it.

However, Washington DC gets tens of millions of visitors each year. The most popular attraction in Washington DC is the National Air and Space Museum with about 8 million visitors per year alone. To put that into perspective, that's more than just about any single amusement park with the exception of those with the name Disney in the title.

My personal preference would be to somehow convince the NASM to house a permanent exhibit, however the USPA is convinced it can build a stand alone facility that can generate enough revenue to be self sustaining.

Maybe you haven't been following this topic in the USPA news. Just to get you up to speed, you might want to take a look at this. http://www.uspa.org/publications/parachutist/capcom.11.03.htm

Is that so? You want to explain to me why then I have given countless tours and lectures to thousands of visitors thispast year? All non-skydivers.
As to the museum issue it is something that has been talked about since the early 90s. If a museum ere to be put in Eloy, it certainly would not be meant to compete with the USPA national parachuting museum .
If one can't see the validity of having one...no problem! We're just an itty bitty lil desert place....nothing to see here...move along.:P

If my USPA money was somehow being used to build something in Eloy, I would make a rather large stink about it. Even as a skydiver I have very little drive to go to Eloy....I'd first take a triip to Perris, Elisinore, The Ranch, Lost Prarie, Skydive Hawaii, etc... I've heard it's a great dz, but the location just isn't a draw. It's the same issue I have with the tunnel there, I'd much rather use the one in Orlando then go to Eloy to use one. But that's just me.

I dated a travel agent for a year and never once did I hear of Eloy as a place she planned for anyone to go to.

I'm sure Eloy gets just as many snowbirds as ZHills does (I've seen them in large crowds out there all this winter) and I still wouldn't support a museum there. As Quade pointed out, you may see thousands but Washington and a variety of other cities see millions. Eloy would get accidental tourists that just happened to be in the area and stopped by, whereas Washinton, New York, Chicago, Orlando, Hawaii all have a built in tourist industry that makes billions of dollars a year. That is a much better business model by default.

Who said anything about USPA monies? IF SDA decided to have a small onsite museum I assure you it would be by the efforts of the folks that live here. (No worries your money is safe)

As to accidental touriost, I am afraid that you are misinformed. We have weekly tours that are a scheduled through the visitors center, and is one of the most popular tours offered.

Yes and that IS why we have chocolate and vanilla ice cream...choices...why...some even like it swirled! Imagine that!

And . . . all of the above said, if Eloy independantly put together an on-site museum, I'd love to see it!

I can see where it would be an interesting addition to the drop zone.
