flyingferret 0 #1 March 5, 2003 I was curious if anyone here ran any distributed computing clients like: SETI http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/ or Folding@Home http://www.folding.stanford.edu/ For those not familiar, this clients use your computer's spare time to crunch numbers for a cause: SETI for analyzing extraterrestrial signals and Folding to analize protein compounds to help cure disease. Folding@Home has a really cool cause behind it. Would there be any interest in creating a dropzone.com team?-- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI. AggieDave 6 #2 March 5, 2003 I was on a SETI group back when I was at Internet Texoma, but that was what seems like a life time ago.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."

flyingferret 0 #4 March 5, 2003 Cool, I might have to join. I really like the idea behind the Folding@Home. It seems very useful, not that I am knocking SETI. Based on the 11 members, I am guessing that perhaps I should join another team like LWD, etc, for Folding. There might not be too many takers?-- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI.
skeletor 0 #5 March 5, 2003 www.grid.org has some good projects too. Seriously tho, if you're not using your PC and it's switched on anyway, why not put it to a good use. rich.
mountainman 0 #6 March 5, 2003 I have been doing F@H for awhile. I have since stopped because the newest version (3.24) has been making my machine crash and stuff. Oh well. Here is my user stats page: http://folding.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/userpage?name=jumpinduo User: jumpinduo Team: SpeedGuide.net (id # 15) Score: 1901.95 User Rank: 4546 WU (work units): 503http://www.brandonandlaura.com
mountainman 0 #7 March 5, 2003 Another reason I decided to quit was due to the 100% usage of your CPU. From what I hear, doing this all the time wears out your parts (namely cooling) since they have to be on full 24/7 while your CPU is producing the most heat since it is running 100% on 24/7. Oh well.http://www.brandonandlaura.com
flyingferret 0 #8 March 5, 2003 Yeah, I was just thinking about joining some teams of other forums I visit. I thought I would check dropzone first. But it looks like participation might be a little low here.-- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI.
PhreeZone 20 #9 March 5, 2003 As long as you have a decent fan (not that crap that comes with the CPU) there should'nt be any issues. I've got servers here at work that stay at 95-100% 23 hours a day.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
AndyMan 7 #10 March 5, 2003 I was on SETI, then I went to Folding@home because the folding project will actually save people lives, the SETI project is just silly. There are some really good distributed projects out there, some of them even trying to find a cure for cancer. If anybody is thinking of running the SETI client, I'd just ask them if looking for little green men is important to us right now, vs finding a cure for cancer. ;) _Am__ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead. Cajones 0 #12 March 5, 2003 Your cooling fans should be on 24/7 anyhow, if you are worried about "wearing out" your computer parts. It's really about thermal stability. The heat-up and cool-down cycles of shutting your computer down is much more wear-and-tear on components than leaving them up and running all the time. The laws of physics are strictly enforced. flyingferret 0 #13 March 5, 2003 True, but another forum I belong to is at number 32 out of all teams on Folding@Home. My additional workload might advance them more.-- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI.
jfields 0 #14 March 5, 2003 I've been in and out of distributed computing projects for awhile. The problem with many of them is stability. If something is going to glitch my system(s), I'm not going to run it. It is just that simple. A few projects like Genome@Home, Folding@Home and DistributedFolding have run on my boxes for awhile. But in the end, they all seem to have some memory leak or runtime problem that diminishes the reliability of the operating system. I've found software problems much more an issue than any kind of degredation of hardware. If you want a good rundown of a number of currently-popular distributed computing projects, look here: http://www.free-dc.org/
Cajones 0 #15 March 5, 2003 Very compelling arguement, AndyMan. Not only have I done some searching to find out more, I've downloaded and am running Folding@Home on one of my processors. I even started a F@H team for dropzone.com... Team #31515. It may not carry the hopes of a jump from a spacecraft, as Bunky's SETI team might provide, but a search for a cure for diseases is a little closer to home for me. If anyone would like to join, it's really easy... Go to http://folding.stanford.edu/ and download and execute the program for your operating system. When you set it up, just put in "31515" for the team number. Edit to add: This program uses your computer when you are not. It runs when your computer is "idle" - not when you are trying to work. It is a world-wide effort, and each and every one of us can contribute. You do not need a super-fast computer, or special computer skills. Just download and install. Choose a username (you can try your dz.com nick), and enter 31515 for the team number. Who knows... Your computer may help save lives and suffering... The laws of physics are strictly enforced. fudd 0 #16 March 5, 2003 I've been running the seti client since 1999. I considered changing to the cancer research one on grid, but decided to stick with seti@home. If we find proof that we are not alone, that will answer one of our oldest questions. It may even change the way many people think. It's kind of like proving that God exists. (which I btw don't belive) Seti@home is space exploration, and space technology has also helped cancer research. There are only 10 types of people in the world. Those who understand binary, and those who don't.

Glipazide 0 #20 May 18, 2004 QuoteI have been doing F@H for awhile. I have since stopped because the newest version (3.24) has been making my machine crash and stuff. Oh well. If you get 4.00, you shouldn't crash at all. It uses 100% of the CPU and if you start a program up, it will share it with that program, unlike before. Give it a try so we can break Rank #69..
