Vallerina 2 #1 May 19, 2004 I have a Canon Elph S230, and I'm going on vacation in a few days. I've used this camera many times, but I know I'm not using the camera to its full potential. Any sort of "awesome" picture I get is pure luck! I've read the little book it comes with, but I'm still not sure of how to get my pictures to look amazing. So, does anybody have tips on how to get incredible looking pictures from my digital camera? I'll be on a beach for a week, so I'd like to get pretty beach pictures. It would also be neat to get pictures at night with the millions of stars that I'll be able to see there (as opposed to the 4 stars that I'm able to see here.)There's a thin line between Saturday night and Sunday morning
Remster 30 #2 May 19, 2004 Quoteand I'm going on vacation in a few days AGAIN???????? Isnt the point of these small, all automatic cameras to remove as many settings and options? (I have one of those too (a small digi, not an elph), so its not a personal attack on the Elph )Remster
Vallerina 2 #3 May 19, 2004 QuoteIsnt the point of these small, all automatic cameras to remove as many settings and options? No....The point of having a digital camera is that I can take as many stupid pictures as I want and not have to spend money getting them developed! Slappie 9 #6 May 19, 2004 Well I know somethings you could use your camera for. But this is after all a skydiving related website. So pictures of boobies isn't really something they want around here. Ahhh screw them all!! Take photos of your boobies and post them. We can all then get a feeling for your ability to wield a camera. Then we can give you more detailed tips on how best to use it. Vallerina 2 #9 May 19, 2004 Nevermind. Given that three different online weather forecasts are telling me that it's going to be raining our entire trip, I don't know how many pictures I'll even be taking. Actually, it's cool in that it takes decent pictures in auto mode, but will also let you manually set the aperture, fstop, and film speed. Val, I bought mine so that I could have a small easy to use digicam, and be able to mess around with the other settings and learn what they do (haven't done much of that yet). But, I have a bunch of web links at home with info for beginning photographers. I'll put them up here later for you.
kelpdiver 2 #13 May 19, 2004 The beauty of the elph line is you have little control - it's going to be a great shot or not regardless of what you do. Well, not entirely. If the initial shot in auto looks bad, switch to manual and: 1- drop iso to 50 for sunset type shots. 2- switch to landscape mode for ... landscapes. Anything over 30 or so feet is infinity. You don't want to focus on the foreground, or wait for it to focus. 3- be wary about the horizon - the + symbol in the middle of my S400 is definitely a few degrees off 0 degrees. 4- If taking pictures of people in the foreground outdoors, turning the flash on may be needed so you don't have a dark person with a bright background. 5- a mini tripod can be very useful. Yeah, my pictures have always turned out nice, but I know they could look better (especially black and white photos.) I actually started playing around with my camera a bit in Spain, and some pictures looked amazing (ie, I had good luck on a few of them.) Well, now it's time to go pack clothes for rainy weather. TimHurford 0 #15 May 19, 2004 The S230 would be simmilar to the s110 or the s300. Try these freebies from Short Courses S110 & s300
