Alien Hand Syndrome! Do you have it?

Recommended Posts

"Sam Ketterling has recently petitioned the court to have a local surgeon cut off his left hand although there is no physical reason to do so. In 1908 a German neurologist discovered a disorder called Alien Hand Syndrome whereby a person loses control of one's hand. Ketterling said in court papers that his hand was trying "to kill him" and that it was only because his right hand was stronger that he could rest the left hand away from his throat. The court denied Ketterling's request after acknowledging this rare condition.

they actually have seen that happen a lot when people have had the pathway (the corpus collosum sp?) between the two sides of their brain cut/severed. each half of the brain controls the opposite side of the body, but because the two halfs can't "talk" to each other, the person thinks that their other half, or other hand, is under some kind of weird control.

What ? You've never tried laying on your arm until your hand goes to sleep? Then it feels like someone elses hand... errrr... so I've heard.

Good name for it though, "Alien Hand". I've been using "Paris Hiltons Hand". ;)
