Rantoul networking

Recommended Posts

This is mainly for Phreezone, but I figured I'd post it publically.

So last year we ran Cat-5 wire to the DZ.com tent for internet access. That's so inelegant, and golf carts kept running over the wire. So what I propose this year is a wireless link from manifest to the DZ.com tent, with a hotspot in the tent itself. Take two DWL-900AP's or equivalent, configure them as point-to-point bridges, and use directional antennas to get the signal to the tent. Take a third AP and use it as an access point. I'll bring the hardware if someone else is willing to configure it all.

Bill, I'll do it  I'm doing all the other computer stuff anyways... this should be simple.

Only issue is that last year we had major 802.11 issues due to the uplink was over Microwave at 2.1 Ghz. It just over powered the local 802.11 devices. But I'll get you more details soon.

Edited to add: What are you talking about Dave. I had the name right;)

Yeah, but if I took Megan, my fiance Morgan might get pissed off. :P

Nevermind that we'd both have to miss some of our summer school, which could fuck our expected graduation dates, which would move back our wedding, which would be annoying, since we both want to get married.

So . . . 802.11a?

Why would you want to use a protocol that most people do not use? I'm a geek and I don't even have a 11a capable card.

I think the issue would be easier to fix if there was a budget to fix it....there are several ways around it but it all costs $$$$. If we had about $900 you could buy a 30db dish that would prob cover the majority of the convention and no additional APs would be needed.

What's a budget? You have no idea what we work with once we're onsite.

Well, I happen to know exactly what you worked with - I snooped last year :), between that and talking to Eric I realize you have no budget.

Two pieces of chewing gum and a piece of string? :P

I'm not sure I can afford Rantoul this year; cash and time off are sorely lacking this year. However, if I do go - I can bring my extra Linksys 11g AP. I thought I still had access to 1000 feet of free, uncut Cat 5 cable but that resource has dried up.

802.11g is a mix of both worlds. It operates at 2.4Ghz (giving it the cost advantage of 802.11b) but it has the 54 megabits per second speed of 802.11a.

Just depends on what setup U preferr..

but they're saying the problem is that the 11b frequencies are overlapping with the uplink frequency, not the fact that it's 11 megabit.

I have an orinoco AP 1000 with an A and a B card(interchangeable) if you wanted to borrow it, one for bridge, one for the network. There's also a howto for PPOE on this model at seattlewireless's website.
