Bummer Today for me

Recommended Posts

I have to say it was a bumer today since I hd to have my dog "Ben" put down. He was an awesome dog and was with me since 1987/88 from the pound when he was about a year old or so. It was time but that does not mean that it was not hard. Vet came out to the house and we gave him a something to put him in a sleepy state. Took about 30 min to take full efect. Petted him the whole time and he was relaxed and happy. After he was ready the vet did it while I was holding him nd pettinghim. Very sad but I know it was time, he was not the dog he was before and right or wrong I thought it ws the right thing to do.[:/]

I just needed to get it off my chest and sorry for bummer post but i kinda needed to say it.....

not to make light of anything, but that's awesome that your vet came to the house. I hated when we put my old dog to sleep (about 17 years old as well), having to go to the vet, it just didn't seem right. Even at that age, he knew that the vet never meant anything good.....

My heart goes out to you. It's never easy losing a pet, they are a family member. I lost my dog a year ago, and the pain has eased somewhat, but the memory of his last day is with me always:(. Hugs to you, you did the right thing.

I feel for you, Scott. It's always hard to lose a companion, especially a long-time one like Ben.

I do think that your vet really rocks though by coming to your place and letting Ben be comfortable in his last moments. I'd have given a lot to have that done when we had to say goodbye our beagle; that was 12 years ago and still hurts.

Sounds like Ben had a good friend in you.

Faster horses, younger women, older whiskey, more money.

Why do they call it "Tourist Season" if we can't shoot them?

I feel ya scott:(

I got my dog as a puppy when I was 9 or 10, after my parents swore never to give me a dog. It was the best surprise ever. I loved that dog. No dog could ever be better. The most intellegent obedient sweetest dog. I raised and trained him, spent a LOT of time jogging with him in the mornings before school, watched him grow.

It was during this time that my parents knew we were evetually going to immigrate. And in 1998 we moved to Australia, where my dog would have to undergo 6 months of quarantine. My parents decided it wasn't worth the hastle, and explained it to me. I sadly understood what they were saying. I then spent more time with the dog than ever, and when the day came I took him to the vet. I had the choice to drop him off or be with him. Off course I was there petting the nervous dog, I think he knew something was coming. I cried my eyes out that day, and many after.

We have had several other dogs besides him, but none compares. I still think about him. That dog was as close as family.

I had the dog for three years, I cannot imagine having a dog for fifteen and having to let go. That dog looks like an awesome, friendly dog. I hope you and I and many others someday see our loved non-human friends again.

Good luck for the future Scott

That's a tough thing to do, esp. with a friend of that many years. When its time, its time though. At least you did what was best for him and sometimes that's hard for people to do.

Just remember all the good times you had with him and pet lost of other dogs:)

I'm trying to keep my posts to a minimum here as this is a skydiver's forum but I felt like I had to say something here:

The best thing you can do for your companion animals is to give them the best life you can, and when the time comes, the best death you can. You rescued him from the pound and gave him all those great extra years. Sounds like your bud had a great life, and a great death. Well done.

"Don't cry because it's over. Smile because it happened." - From a signature file I saw on here.

"In my car, my dog is no longer fat and slow. He is a god. A fast, drooling, beautiful god." - From an Audi commercial.

He's fast again.

You did great. Smile at the memories. And I personally am certain that the life spark is not extinguished when the body gives out, either for us, or the beasties.

I've been there too. Rock on.
