ChasingBlueSky 0 #1 May 21, 2004 I realize that most people that have WiFi are geeks and they already know the security holes/risks and have taken the basic steps needed.... But this is for the newbies that have one up and running. MobilePC Magazine has a "How To" guide for wireless setup....it's a good read. But here is the bad side: It lists all the default IP's, SSID, and Login Info. True, this info is on the net if you look, but now it is all in one handy place so even the most basic wardrivers can gain access to your network. So, if you thought it wasn't a big deal, and you didn't need to change your default info, you may want to do it._________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Guest #2 May 21, 2004 Common knowledge, as you say, but anybody who doesn't take measures to defend their wireless setup kinda deserves whatever they get, imho. There's a guy down my street who hasn't even changed the admin password on his NetGear unit. I've thought about leaving a nasty-gram on his desktop, but I'm not that kind of guy... mh ."The mouse does not know life until it is in the mouth of the cat." beowulf 1 #5 May 21, 2004 The least they could do is use the encryption. I use encryption and block all MAC address's other then mine. That forces the hacker to have to spoof a mac address. Wifi is no where near secure no matter what you do.

WFFC 1 #8 May 22, 2004 Sooo what you're telling me is that finding out how much porn my neighbor had on her puter by adding my wireless card mac to her linksys wrt54g router was a bad thing? slug 1 #9 May 22, 2004 computer Question: I've been considering going Wireless. Since my nearest neighbor live's 300 ft from my house (not far enough) and we live 1/3 mile off the main road do I need to be concerned about Wireless security. R.I.P. slug 1 #11 May 22, 2004 QuoteDo you leave your front door wide open and unlocked all the time? Well as a matter of fact.........But to get thru my unlocked front doorYou have to get past my two pit bulls, a Big Roterweiler, German Shepard, Brown Bear, My girlfriend, wife & mother in law. You get past them I'll help you load the contents of my house in two minutes & I be very happy if you kill me quickly. However in cyber space my 300' death zone around my house won't protect privacy. How close does a cyber snoop have to get to a wireless network to "Walk thru the door" ???? A wireless system is nice but it's not really necessary in my situation. If I don't have it than I don't have to worry about someone breaking into it because it don't exist.R.I.P.
wildblue 7 #12 May 22, 2004 Speaking of wireless.... I'm sitting at gate a19 in Philly's airport.... flight is delayed, I'm annoyed.it's like incest - you're substituting convenience for quality
ChasingBlueSky 0 #13 May 22, 2004 Well, how far the signal goes depends on a few things: what form of wireless you use, location, strength of broadcast, obstacles/walls that would block/interfer with the signal, or any noise in the environment (cordless phones, microwave, etc). Also, if the wardriver had a directional antenae, it would be easier for them to grab some of your signal. You are not a typical target due to your location, and somehow I think you would notice someone sitting at the end of your driveway with a laptop. But, as you mentioned - you keep your door unlocked but only because you have that protection. It takes no more than 5 minutes to make your WiFi a bit more secure - so just do it and feel a little better about it._________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me....
