ChrisL 2 #1 May 28, 2004 According to a recent dz.com poll, 24% of us have Post university degrees 37% have a University degree 12% have a college diploma 17% aquired SOME education beyond HS 6% graduated high school (I am in this group) This means that fully 96% of us at least graduated high school. So why is it that about 90% of us have terrible grammar and can barely spell? Not a very good commentary on our educational systems.__ My mighty steed
Gawain 0 #2 May 28, 2004 LMAO! 'Cause "school smarts" doesn't equal "spelling smarts" or "attention to detail"...you should know that. I know some folks that are so smart, their handwriting wasn't allowed in the workplace anymore. It was that bad. These same people were so intelligent, the "common sense" had been wiped out... So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! ChrisL 2 #6 May 28, 2004 QuoteHey, dawg. My grammar is great. My typing is not. So you'll se plenty of type-O's in my stuff. I make a definite distinction between spelling errors and typos. For instance, when someone refers to the brakes on their canopy as "breaks" or their landing as a "flair" These are not typos, just bad spelling __ My mighty steed

ChrisL 2 #8 May 28, 2004 Quote Shouldn't that be a colon after the word "poll"? Should it? You make my point for me. Note that I used the word "us" and listed myself in the least educated group from the poll. __ My mighty steed
ChrisL 2 #9 May 28, 2004 QuoteBecause it's the internet, and a lot of people just don't care. This isnt about caring. To use the same example as before, if someone knows the difference between breaks and brakes, they will use the right one 99% of the time even if they dont particularly care. The errors I'm refering to are made because the user doesnt know the difference. My post is a commentary on our educational system, not an attempt to make people look or feel stupid __ My mighty steed

The errors I'm refering to are made because the user doesnt know the difference. Not always. I know the difference between two, to and too. I know the difference between there, their and they're. However, sometimes in the heat of battle, I type the wrong one, not because I don't know the difference, but because they sound the same and I think that's the way my brain sometimes processes the information. You should see my printing. I make at least three different versions of the letter "e" and they appear to pop up randomly. It's not because I don't know how to print the letter, it's just some weird fluke in my head.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
ChrisL 2 #11 May 28, 2004 QuoteYou should see my printing. Nah, handwriting is a completely seperate issue. That stuff comes from some dank, cobwebby place in the back of the mind that has little to do with intellect or education. I start the numbers 0 and 6 at the bottom for gods sake! I wasn't taught that, its just the way I do it. While printing, I routinely connect certain combinations of letters. Go figure. As to the rest, I was making a generalization, not claiming that everyone that misspells something does so because they dont know any better. Certainly there are those that know the difference and dont care, and those that know the difference and just mix them up occasionally. Not that I can prove it, but I'd be willing to bet that the majority do so simply because, while they may be aware of the different spellings, they dont know which one is correct in a given situation so they pick the first one that comes to mind. This is an educational problem in my opinion. Quote It's not because I don't know how to print the letter, it's just some weird fluke in my head. Then perhaps you would care to explain why you are not called "Flukehead" __ My mighty steed
