happythoughts 0 #1 June 2, 2004 During WWII, several Pacific islands started "Cargo Cults" because of the amounts of free stuff given to natives in military staging areas. Kind of like waiting for Santa Claus. They worship "John Frum" and pray to him. Essentially "John from America" who brings them gifts (cargo and supplies). Apparently there is a lot of tension between the CC people and Christians. The cultists regard the Christians as idiots for waiting 2,000 years for the return of Jesus while they have only waited 50 years for the return of John. Hard to beat that logic. Two groups arguing about whose invisible guy is better. In May, it got pretty serious because the police were called out. 400 islanders armed with axes and spears sent 25 people to the hospital. They also burned down the Presbyterian church, but that could happen anywhere. news clicky

freeflir29 0 #3 June 2, 2004 QuoteTwo groups arguing about whose invisible guy is better What's the line I recently heard from Morgan Freeman in a movie? "God is like an invisible friend for adults." I have my own religious convictions but damn does that statement ring true.
