Milan 0 #1 June 3, 2004 hi guys, im sorry to be asking so much questions. i have a new question. why does my ip change each time i log on to the internet ? is that a good thing or bad thing ?
seekfun 0 #2 June 3, 2004 Milan, Your internet service provider, hereinafter referred to as your ISP, has only a finite number of IP addresses it can issue to its users. Therefore, every time you log on to your ISP, it issues you a temporary use of one of its available IP addresses. The moment you log off, that IP address becomes available to another customer. This is mostly a good thing. It keeps IP addresses available for those wishing to use the web. It enhances security for you by changing your computer's address with each logon. And, it keeps costs down because your ISP only has to pay for the number of IP addresses it believes it will use during peak times, rather than one IP address per registered user. There is a downside. You will have a difficult time setting up servers with a dynamic IP. So, if you want to set up a game server and geek out with all of your buddies, you'll have to logon, fire up your server, and then email or cell-phone them your IP address. I'm assuming that you're using a dial-up connection. Your post made it sound that way. However, you can get changing IP addresses with cable and DSL connections as well. They change on a periodic basis even though you remain connected to the web. They're called 'dynamic IP' addresses. For an extra fee, you can generally get an IP address that does not change - a 'static IP'. However, the static IP is not an option with dial-up (to my knowledge (which is minimal)). Milan 0 #3 June 3, 2004 hi seekfun, thanks for the information. i'm using an adsl modem but the ip does not change when i'm on the internet. it only changes when i log out, and log in again. so i guess that should be a good thing right ?
seekfun 0 #4 June 3, 2004 Milan, That is a good thing unless you want to set up some servers. If you want to set up some servers, you'll either have to get a static IP address or use a workaround. There are some services out there that allow you to run servers using dynamic IP addresses. I would recommend one, but I haven't used one in more than two years. So, it's been a while. But, if you search Godgle {sic} for 'dynamic ip hosting yadda yadda bing bang' you'll come up with something you can use. Some services are free. But, if you're not running any servers, I would let it be. It's for the best. TTFN, topher "...there is a there out there..." - Tom Robbins
