riggerrob 643 #1 April 19, 2010 FAA Master Riggers - working in some-one else's loft, with the loft owner supplying sewing machines, materials, etc - what is your take-home pay? Alternatively, what piece rates are you paid?
JerryBaumchen 1,468 #2 April 19, 2010 Hi Rob, Pay? Pay? Since I have never worked for someone else, I cannot comment. I do feel that virtually every rigger there is, is underpaid for the responsibility & potential liability that they face everytime that they do anything on a parachute system. J. Scott Hamilton, aviation lawyer, one-time Ass't Dir of USPA & one-time USPA Pres, once told me that he felt that the rigger with his name & seal on a rig had the most exposure of anyone in the parachute game. 'Exposure' is one of those lawyer words meaning your a** is exposed to the vultures. Does that help? JerryBaumchen
likestojump 3 #3 April 19, 2010 I outsource some work to a couple of Master Riggers. Most work is per piece, but when it's hourly, it ends up being $45/hour.
azureriders 0 #4 April 20, 2010 Outsourcing to a Master Rigger, or that Master Rigger working in your loft on your machines, are two entirely different things. Not a rigger at all here, just commenting as a contractor who both employees other qualified personell and also outsources work.
likestojump 3 #5 April 20, 2010 I agree. That's why I pointed out the details, and that's why I did not vote. Riggers are underpaid, but such is the nature of the trade :(
koppel 5 #6 April 20, 2010 Im an Aussie Rigger working in the loft where I was trained. been there for over four years now, I get au$25/hour as a contractor. Enough...? Not sure, but the guy I work for is fair and when I want a new line-set or PC I just go right ahead and build it and I don't have to pay for materials so I am happy.I like my canopy... ...it lets me down. riggerrob 643 #7 April 20, 2010 "... when I want a new line-set or PC I just go right ahead and build it and I don't have to pay for materials so I am happy...." ................................................................... That is a standard rigger "perk." Since riggers are expected to lead-by-example ... keeping their personal parachutes in great shape ... they aree normally allowed to use loft machines and tools for free. Many loft owners do not charge riggers for materials used to repair their personal gear.
