On being an uncle . . .

Recommended Posts

OK, so a few months ago I rented a house with my Sister, her husband and their two kids to help them with expenses. They’ve been living with my Mom since moving back from North Carolina over a year ago. Neither of them make much money, and finding a place big enough for their family that they could afford seemed impossible. So, I offered to share a place and pay half the expenses.

Giving up my freedom and privacy has been difficult. I come home and am usually greeted by the kids and or my sister telling me of their day and usually wanting something. If I leave the house I’m asked where I’m going and when I’ll be back. I get followed all over the house and often to the bathroom by someone wanting my attention. My niece is always knocking on my bedroom door wanting me to read to her, wanting to know where my cats are, wanting me to tuck her in, etc.. Don't get me wrong, I think it’s great that they want to be part of my life and me be part of theirs, it’s just that I’m used to, and like, living alone. At times I wonder why I agreed to do this.

Last night I was working on a project in my room. My niece knocks on my door for the fifth or sixth time. This time she wanted me to tuck her in – which I love to do, but I was a bit frustrated by the many interruptions. I took her to her room, she climbed into bed. I tucked the covers in around her. I gave her the usual shpeal about not biting the bed bugs. She gave me her usual shpeal that she doesn’t bite bed bugs they bite us. I gave her the usual kiss on the forehead, told her I loved her, and when I went to leave she said, “Uncle Keith.” I said, “Yeeees Crissy.” She said, “Will you marry me?” :)
I’m not wondering why I do it today.
