Evelyn 0 #1 June 11, 2004 How far from your parents do you live and how often do you visit? My parents live in San Diego and I live in L.A. - about 2 1/2 hours away. For many years my life was so busy that even though I'm only 2 1/2 hours away I'd go months between visits. Now that my life has slowed down and my parents have gotten older I'm making it a point to visit once a month (I can make the DZ be on the way - so jump on the way down , visit parents, jump on the way back.) DownWind 0 #2 June 11, 2004 My parents are in NJ and I have lived as far away as Germany, currently in Michigan. I make it home once or twice a year, but talk to them often. It would be nice to get home more often, but distance precludes it.

I used to be just about the same distance from my folks, and it was just about perfect. We were close enough that we could visit often, sometimes on short notice. But it was also far enough away that I had an excuse when I didn't feel like visiting. And, far enough that we didn't drop in on each other without notice, and maybe arrive at an awkward time. Now I'm probably about 3,000 miles from Dad-Michigan to Arizona. We only get to see each other once or twice a year. Michele 1 #5 June 11, 2004 When I split with my ex, I could go anywhere I wanted. I came back to Burbank, which is where I was raised. Dad, at 82, lives with his roommate Elliot (who's 80) about 10 minutes walk away, so in case of emergency, I can get there really fast, even if my car is broken. Since I work in the community, I'm never too far away. But far enough that he and I see each other about twice a month. We're on the phone a lot, though. Mom moved to Seattle about 15 years ago from the area, and then moved to New Jersey. She comes in once a year, and I try to make sure I call her once a week. Not always done, but as best as I can. (My brother is 40, and is my business partner. He lives about 25 minutes away, but we see each other lots, and talk more.) EricaH 0 #7 June 11, 2004 My parents live in FL where I grew up. I tried to move to Seattle for College & they told me to pick somewhere east of the Mississipp, so I chose Chicago. Now I see them for just under 1 wk/year & sometimes that's too often. My closest rel is over 5.5 hrs away & I see them bout every other year & that's plenty. I do talk w/ them bout every 1.5 weeks - just so they know I'm still alive. My b/f has loads of relatives in the area. Now I have stupid family obligations again (b-days, weddings, christenings, holiday dinners, mom guilt trips bout not visitin enough) - blech!! Just had to go to his parent's home for dinner last night. If not for teh people, the dinner was GREAT & I don't have to do dishes after - that's the best part. Guess I'm just not into that whole family thing. I've been blessed w/ great friends though. There is no can't. Only lack of knowledge or fear. Only you can fix your fear. Casch 0 #10 June 11, 2004 My mom lives about 6 hours away in WA and I'm in Oregon. I see her every few months but I could go my whole life without seeing her again. I'm not a big fan of her. My dad however, I live with him. Moving out this summer and I'll still be spending most of my time at his place. I don't think a father and son could have a better relationship than the one mine and I have. He's more like a roomate than a father
