Standard Transmissions

Recommended Posts

We're trying to sell my wife's car. A 2000 Honda Accord with 46k miles on it. Perfect condition. Asking $8,500 for it (which we've learned is a steal and should be asking more).

We've gotten tons of interest, but everyone has balked when they learned it's a stick.

I think this is wussy. They can't take a couple of days to learn the joy of a standard transmission? What the heck?:S

You should educate them on the gas-saving benefits of standard transmissions.

Among many other benefits...

I haven't purchased an automatic in the last 10 eyars; I currently drive a Jetta 5speed...love it, love it, love it.

I chose to learn on a stick, because I figured driving an auto would be easier, and if faced with an emergency, I would rather know how to deal with a "worst case"...as in, my friend needs to get to the hospital, there is no other car available but a stick...and I'm gonna let them die because I don't know how to drive a stick? (fine, calling 911 didn't occur to me, but I was 16....)....

Anyway, I learned, loved it, and still love it.

Stick shifts rock!

The car we used for driver training when I was in school had a manual transmission (yes, they did have to fix the clutch on a regular basis ;)). So I knew how to drive a manual before I had my license.

My current car has a four speed manual. I've always owned (and preferred) automatics in the past though. Easier to drive and I'm less likely to "hotrod" an automatic. :D

Manual transmission is the only way to go (unless perhaps you spend half of your life in stop & go L.A. freeway traffic). I own a truck and spend a lot of time getting stuck on beaches down the Baja. Having a manual transmission makes a big difference in maximizing torque control on slippery surfaces. Automatic trannys are for trannies...

My dad actually have me learn for that same reason. I used it as an excuse to drive at age 14 :D

I never learned how to drive a manual. The only manual cars in my family when I learned to drive was a 65 and a 66 mustang. No way was Dad going to let me learn on those classics.

I do spend quite a bit of time in LA traffic, so I like my automatic for now, but have been wanting to learn how to drive a stick for a long time.

LMAO!!! My dad had a really fast 70 Nova with a manual trans when I was 15. Oddly enough, they decided to trade it in on a Mercedes about the time I was doing driver training... :S:ph34r:

Best reason originally to have a stick was few would ever want to ask to borrow it!

It's gotten very hard to get the car you want with a stick. Some aren't available, some are gone as soon as they show up. Yet somehow they don't change their production numbers - I guess they figure they can always sell an automatic, not necessarily the other way though.

You should be listing the 5speed in the ad. It's a more important detail than the color.

With all the bumper to bumper traffic of California, I no longer have the stick as an essential feature in the buying decision. Mileage isn't that different anymore - the Subarus rate almost equal as the auto AWD acts more like FWD on the roads.

heck, if it were still under warantee & you were in IL - I'd buy it from you! I love Honda's esp if they're manual!

There is no can't. Only lack of knowledge or fear. Only you can fix your fear.

If you'Re more then 1 person to drive a car, a automatic is better. Every one uses a clutch sligthy deifferently and the friction points wear differently.

This is quite true....

I learned to drive a standard when I was 22 because I fell in love with a Fiat Spider that I just had to have even though it was a stick shift. So I rented a car for a week to learn (didn't tell them that's what I was doing with it :D) - I had to call all over town before I finally found a place with a standard car for rent, and it turned out to be a beaten-up old station wagon that smelled like dog pee, but it was a good car to learn with. Anyhow, I was really really really wishing I had just learned to drive a standard in the first place, because it was extremely frustrating having to learn how to drive all over again! (So I'm not surprised that none of the people who have been calling you want to learn either!) But once I learned, I realized how much more fun it is to drive a standard, and (four vehicles later) I have not even considered buying an automatic since then.

Still a lame reason to get a transmission that steals power, gas milage and decreases the overall life of the engine. So you might have to replace the clutch a few thousand miles early. Most clutches (even when mistreated) will last for over 80,000 miles and it really isn't that much to replace a clutch.

I abuse the SH** out of everything I drive and I've had far fewer problems with standard.
illegible usually

I learned to drive a stick on an old Ford truck with a 3 speed on the column. It used to freak people out when I would try to put it in "reverse" while driving down the road. My current car has a 5 speed automatic.

I dont like Automatics... Both of my Mercedes even have 4 speed manual.. and can actually accelerate going up mountain passes they just have a better power curve that the 3 sp Auto they put in Mercedes do not have.

Needless to say... the 4x4 Dodge Ram is a six speed stick.. I use it to tow a fairly big boat.. and going down mountains with a stick with a boat and trailer that weigh as much as the truck does.... makes for a real good pucker factor that would be far higher with an automatic. Riding the brakes like so many people do is a REALLLLY bad idea in teh mountains. I just take it down to a gear that the power of the engine is letting me down the hill and stay the hell away from the brakes.

I can't stand driving an automatic car, drives me up a wall.

Perhaps you shouldn't drive so close to the buildings then[:/]
