Guest #1 June 18, 2004 Hi all, Decided today that I would go fly a kite on a feature I call (what else?) "Kite Hill" in Magnuson Park in Seattle. It was sunny and warm today, with a stiff breeze from the West. I really enjoyed myself. Consider: I've been out of work almost ten months now, but if I was working, I wouldn't have been able to see this view, on such a beautiful day. I mean, I could be stuck slaving away in a veal-fattening pen (cubicle) somewhere. Time for a little Seattle travelogue...... Please see attachment titled "kite hill3.jpg": This is a composite panorama of four digital photos, each with approx 30 deg field of view for a total of approx 120 degrees. Time of day - about 2pm. The leftmost side of the frame is North; the rightmost frame is SSE. Mt. Rainier is faintly visible in the rightmost frame. This panorama is from the Northwest side of Lake Washington. Bill Gates' behemoth mansion (not visible) is across the water at the right edge of the leftmost frame. At the bottom of the two middle frames of the panorama is a series of peculiar black wedges. These are in fact control surfaces from decommissioned nuclear submarines, arranged in a pattern imitating an Orca pod. Very cool, imho... The second picture shows a kite being flown that looks almost exactly like a semi-elliptical ZP canopy (please see "parafoil01.jpg" Upon speaking with the chap flying it, I learned that this particular kite is a training canopy for the sport of para-boarding, where one uses a kite like this one for lift, but has a surfboard attached to one's feet. Turns out the guy used to skydive in San Diego and still has his rig (a Talon from the "Leap Frogs" team). He says he's currently preoccupied with para-boarding, but that he'd like to skydive again. He asked me how much a reserve I&R would run. Naturally I steered him to the Seattle Skydivers website site... And to top it off, a photographer from the Seattle Times took my picture for the paper (might not run, but I was wearing a Hawaiian shirt and looking tres colorful, so you never know). Yup, it was a good day to be unemployed... mh . edit to add location details.

hooked 0 #4 June 18, 2004 Magnuson Park is beautiful! Remember when the mysterious black monolith appeared and what controversy surrounded it? It was awesome. I'll try to find some pics and post it! Guest #5 June 18, 2004 Actually, there was only one monolith (1x4x9) ala "2001: A Space Odyssey" that showed up in the park, placed there by self-styled "guerilla artists". The monolith had quite an adventure - it was "kidnapped" by other "guerilla artists", and put on an island in Green Lake. The city officials got PO'd at the whole thing. It was cool & wacky at the same time. The monolith is now in the original artists' garage, but it should be down by the shore with the nuke fins, imho... mh ."The mouse does not know life until it is in the mouth of the cat." skyyhi 0 #7 June 18, 2004 I love Seattle. When it is gorgeous, there is no comparison anywhere. I lived there for 3 years and remember it fondly. Course, it is a tad bit on the chilly side for this desert rat. . .but I do miss it occasionally. . .________________________________________ Take risks not to escape life… but to prevent life from escaping. ~ A bumper sticker at the DZ FGF #6 Darcy

Jumpervint 0 #10 June 18, 2004 Unless it snows, and then the whole freakin' place shuts down. You know how you forecast weather in Seattle? If you can't see Rainier, it's raining, and if you can, then it's going to rain. Horrible place. Vint. . . . . "Make it hard again." SeaKev 0 #12 June 18, 2004 Mark, ya gotta keep this weather thing on the down low. We've got a rep to protect. Okay folks, nothing but hop-n-pops 'round here. 3 or 4 layers under your jumpsuit on the rare trip to full altitude.
