Shotgun 1 #1 June 18, 2004 For those of you who use ebay, what do you think is the proper thing for a seller to do when an item they sold has been misrepresented? For example, I recently purchased a dress on ebay that was sold as "Very Good, Never Worn" condition with a chest measurement of 33". When it got here, there are several stains on the dress, and it is very large - I measured the chest to be 36". I informed the seller of this and they wrote back offering to refund the purchase price but not the shipping price and let me keep the dress (in this case, the shipping cost was actually MORE than the purchase price) - but only if and after I left positive feedback for them. They also mentioned to me that I should admit that even with the stains, I got a really good deal on a designer dress. (This I thought was fairly rude since any price is not a good deal when I can't even wear the dress since it is not the size it was supposed to be.) So, if I were the seller in this situation (and I was dealing with a reputable buyer) then I would just eat the $ on this one and refund every penny that was paid - especially since this was such a low dollar transaction anyway... But, I haven't been using ebay all that long so I am just wondering if my expectations are too high or what? Most of my ebay transactions have been really good deals, but it's annoying to me when I think I've gotten a good deal only to find out an item was misrepresented. Just curious to hear others' opinions on this kind of situation...
noname 0 #2 June 18, 2004 People make mistakes on measurements so I wouldn't stress over that. But when you totally misrepresent an item ... BRAND NEW NEVER WORN and it has stains then there is a problem. Would you buy the dress if the ad said "designer dress, great deal, few stains"? I would write the seller again, state that the item is not as advertised and ask for a full refund. If it wont cost a lot to ship it back then you can offer to return it. What the seller charged you for shipping might be a lot more than the actual cost to ship. No positive feedback until everything is to your satisfaction! chaoskitty 0 #4 June 18, 2004 Potential buyers, such as yourself, rely on the feedback forum to reduce the screw-over factor on ebay. If they offered to refund, but still misrepresented the item, leave neutral feedback and explain why. They have the opportunity to respond to the neutral feedback, as do you if they leave you neg or neutral. I wouldn't let them bully you in to leaving a positive mark unless they admit their mistake and correct it.

Dealing with some people, who we will call "Ebay Assholes", you will be threatened with bad feedback for leaving bad feedback, even if you were in the right (say for ordering a dress in good condition in the right size and getting one with stains in a different size). I say suck it up and just make sure you put the honest truth (if the unflattering side of it). People will still sell to you with some bad feedback marks, I reckon, unless they know they're planning on hosing people over and they don't want you to give them trouble. And in that case, you don't want to buy from them anyway. :) -=-=-=-=- Pull.
Shotgun 1 #6 June 18, 2004 QuotePotential buyers, such as yourself, rely on the feedback forum to reduce the screw-over factor on ebay. This is why I agonize on the feedback sometimes. I hate to leave positive feedback when the transaction wasn't perfect, but I hate to leave neutral when they're trying to correct the problem (since people do make honest mistakes sometimes). Though I guess if they get enough neutral or negative comments, they'll learn to pay more attention to the details of what they're selling??? I wish ebay offered more feedback options than just positive, neutral or negative... like a 1-10 rating, with more room to leave details. (The comment line they give you is not usually long enough to describe a problem.) I think I'll write to ebay and suggest that... Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone... I'm gonna blow it off for now and deal with it when I get back from my week-long vacation which I am leaving for in the morning. Well, it wasn't expensive because I was buying it cheap on ebay... And it's just a plain cotton sundress, but it's by DKNY so I guess that makes it a designer dress (according to the seller anyway ;-) But, I know... it is hard to imagine me wearing a dress at all. I just felt like acting feminine for a change. 'Course I didn't know it was gonna be a Monica Lewinsky-style dress (with the stains and all)!
