Once a skydiver always a skydiver?

Recommended Posts

Ok I met this gentlman, well honestly I wouldnt call him that, but this guy started jumping in about 1996 and made a total of 21 jumps his first year. he stopped jumping in late 1997 early 1998 and hasnt jumped since. Is he still considered a "skydiver?"

OK call me a loser.....yes that option is there too, but I met him at a party and he was gloating to everyone how he is a skydiver and trying to impress all the girls there. You know girls dig skydivers:P. Well I figure sweet I want to say hi to this person.....well after talking to him he hasnt jumped in like 6 years and never wants to again.

Dont ask me why I am still thinking about this.....but. What do you think?

no... if someone wants to again... but can't for some reason... then still a skydiver... otherwise not a skydiver but a poser...

put this dude in his place... walk up to him and start quizing him on the type of container, what size canopy, what his interests are, FF, RW, Swooping, etc... that'll set him right...

I believe if you jump your a skydiver. I had a friend who laid off from skydiving for over ten years. I asked him to go on a skydive with me for about 3 years and he complied in 2002. We made one jump and he hasn't jumped since but he was pretty stoked. Now he had over 1200 skydives previously and he forgot more about skydiving than I knew and he doesn't forget much. In fact he showed me how to pack and he didn't forget a thing after ten years of not doing it. He's a skydiver even though he's not active. So's the guy you met. Neither may ever make a skydive again but they did do it and that qualifies.

I agree with you that if a person makes a skydive they are a skydiver, but this individual seemed to not even care about the sport anymore, and only used his past jumping history to score with the ladies.

let me look that up in the "Once was a skydiver handbook"...hmmm..... nope, can't find it....B|

So what if the guy was "posing".... what does it matter? Life goes on.......

I see lots of jumpers call themselves "pilots".... So, I'll look that up in the FAR/AIM.....And yep, once a pilot, always a pilot....B|

just my 2 cents,

Buck

Yeah he was posing, and that gets me mad. I dont know why but it seems foolish.

Most people do get turned off from obnoxious skydiver comments......maybe he was just heavily trashed, which in that case....he is still a skydiver.:P

If you don't skydive anymore and don't plan to jump again, you used to be a skydiver.

Yeah, and then they date one and find out skydivers spend all their time and money at the dropzone. Weddings, movies, walk in the park, hang at the beach... fuck that babe, it's the weekend, the winds are 10mph and the skies are blue. Cya.

I won't bring up the fact that I Skydive unless someone else does... I do it for me...:$ not to get the ladies...

I'll talk skydiving... with other skydivers... but... I've learned over the years that people don't like to listen to me talk... because I always go on and on and on and on and on and on...

But I see y'alls points... He can do what he likes...

I am not really qualified to talk as I have only done a couple of static line jumps (time, money, weather and work, bah :|keep on conspiring against my AFF plans) so dont consider myself a skydiver (yet) but having spent years climbing, almost to the exclusion of everything but beer, I still consider myself a climber even though I havent climbed in a couple of years (damn these grown up commitments). I guess if you've done it and intend to do it again, yes you are, if the intent isnt there then its just been an experience.

Experience is a series of non-fatal errors.

I would classify him as "used to be a skydiver." I wouldn't try and embarras him in front of people though, unless he was being REALLY obnoxious. Life is too fun to worry about silly things like that. :)

i voted no,in fact i dont even call myself a skydiver anymore even as i do aprox 30 jumps a year or so,Im a BASE jumper that is my passion..

However i think that you can call you a skydiver IF you jump enough to maintain your licence or if your a student you jump enough to not get moved back a step as you once in a while come back and makes some jumps...
In fact i knew a guy that still were a student as he had aprox 100jumps(actualy i knows 2 but this guy since has stopped and the other got his licens at jump 89B|),he never went further than 10 or 15 sec delays and he had fun about that,in my eyes he were a skydiver.

What if your injuryed?? well it really depends.. in my eyes you can be a injuryed skydiver if you expect to get back in the sport but if you plan to Quit your not...

but who really care aslong as people has fun...

by the way i dont think that gentleman can call himself a skydiver anymore,if so i can call myself a pilot as i 1,5 years ago tryed to to start fly and land a plane, but never did it since:D:ph34r:

If they have no desire to jump, then absolutely not. This guy is an asshat. Nothing more.

In response to "Once a skydiver, always a skydiver", there's no way that's true. I know somebody who still jumps but acts like a whuffo in every way, shape, and form.

How about me? Am I a poser? Just because I carry to much debt to get back in the air right now I'm considered a poser? I haven't jumped in 2 years.

I do want to jump again and I'm itching really badly to get back in the air. Just not meant to be right now.

As far as someone who made 21 jumps 6 or 7 years ago and still brags about it. Well they need to find something else to boost their ego. That's just sad. I wouldn't dwell in the fact they call themselves a skydiver. I'd stand with my buds drinkin beer while pointing and laughing at the loser.

Guess what I'm getting at is, if the passion is still deep inside you and you're thinking about the rush that is skydiving all the time. Then ya, you're still a skydiver. IF not your a poser...

I do have to admit, my time and friends on dz.com help keep the candle lit and the dream alive. I will be back in the air one day B|

Nope, if ya still want to jump and plan to in the future as soon as possible, you're just fine Slappy. B| Still a skydiver. :)

I distinguish between "I am a skydiver" and "I used to be a skydiver" by asking this question:
Could he/she make a successful solo skydive right now, falling stable, landing uninjured, and capable of dealing with most malfunctions ?

I will assume that all skydivers who are current could answer 'Yes'.
I would also assume that talented skydivers with thousands of jumps and years of experience could take a 5-10 year break and still answer "yes" to the above question. (..or not ? Comments welcome.)
However, someone with <100 jumps, after a 5 year layoff, is more likely to spin all over the sky from loss of muscle-memory, more likely to land hard under canopy and more likely to brainlock on a malfunction.

So, in short, I consider usedtajump and hooknswoop as "I am a skydiver" while I consider the guy that BoostedXT has mentioned as "used to be a skydiver".
Of course, this perception may change over time as my own experience slowly allows me to understand more about the importance of currency.;)

This guys line has nothing to do with skydiving. Guys say anything to get the chicks. He just reaching into his past to find an "in".

I'm sure when he hangs out with his buddies, he doesn't even bring it up.

One of the coolest skydivers I knew was a guy with 35 jump in 1969. He drank at my local watering hole. He still talked about jumping. Hey! Skydiving is cool. He had great memories that lasted him a lifetime. He was always curious what jump number I was at. He'd see me walking down the street and yell out, "Hey Airbourne! What's the count this week?"

So, I guess my vote, is once a jumper always a skydiver. But in your guys case, once a cheese-ball, always a cheese-ball.

I had a little over 200 jumps and my D license when I quit jumping in 1999. In 2000 I made a memorial jump on the anniversary of my best friend's bounce. This year I've made 5 jumps and I'm in the process of buying gear to get back in the air.

In those 5 years there wasn't a day went by that I didn't think about skydiving. I kept in touch with a lot of my friends at the dropzone. I read dropzone.com on a regular basis. I stayed current in my mind at least if not in my muscles. A couple of months ago I sat through a modified first jump course, that was primarily an oral quiz of what I knew and a little discussion on a few techniques/issues. All 5 of my jumps have been controlled stable exits with solid control during freefall. At least as good as when I was jumping regularly.

Was I a skydiver during those 5 years?

YES!
