kallend 2,129 #1 June 16, 2004 Hard to believe, but true: www.in-sourced.com/article/articleview/1910/1/1/ "The first-ever Millennium Technology Prize has been awarded to Tim Berners-Lee for the invention of the WWW service on the internet. The prize of one million euros and the prize trophy, "The Peak", were presented by the President of The Republic of Finland, Ms. Tarja Halonen, in Finlandia Hall. "We must remember that the web is a long way from revealing it’s full potential. The extension from human-readable to include also machine-readable information is just one direction of development," Tim Berners-Lee said in his acceptance speech. Berners-Lee, an Englishman and a graduate of the University of Oxford, is currently working on further development of the web at the Massachusetts In-stitute of Technology (MIT). He created the WWW, which was first released in 1991, at CERN in Switzerland."... The only sure way to survive a canopy collision is not to have one. (I'm only joking Snopers) For what its worth, Tim Berners-Lee also got a Knighthood at the tail end of last year for his contributions.-------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. I spent 4 years living in Oxford when I was a student and it is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. You can easily see the whole city in a day - but be prepared to do a lot of walking! You should definitely try to see all the old colleges - University College, Oriel College, Merton, Corpus, Christ Church, New College, Magdalen, Trinity, Balliol and my old college Brasenose. There are some reasonable walks with a tour guide which are probably the best way to see the place and get a feel for the history. Also try to see the University Church, the Martyrs Memorial, the Old School Quad of the Bodlein Library and the Radcliffe Camera. You can get a gorgeous view of the whole city by going up either Carfax or the University (St. Mary's) Church Tower. hth! Vicki

Cambridge is 1hr north of London by car, university founded around 1250, lots of old college buildings, consistently named Europe's top university, beats Oxford regularly in rowing and winning Nobel prizes, and it's quite close by Chatteris where there's a DZ. Also visit the huge aviation museum (Europe's largest) at Duxford, 10 miles south of Cambridge. Erasmus, Newton, Darwin, Maxwell, Rutherford were all at Cambridge. The electron and neutron were discovered there.... The only sure way to survive a canopy collision is not to have one.

Nope - Oxford was first choice - I wanted a beautiful city, with an excellent University (the oldest in the English speaking world, Cambridge having been founded later by students who were kicked out of Oxford !) and a decent night life too! Disgraceful I'm sure... but nowhere near as disgraceful as being kicked out of the only University in your country at the time and having to set up your own lesser establishment elsewhere! Last I heard they don't even make students at Cambridge wear sub-fusc for exams anymore... tut...! Vicki
