vdschoor 0 #1 June 21, 2004 All, So I'm going to Lost Prairie this year, and I'm driving out there together with Genoyamamamamamamoto. We're going to make this trip worthwhile, not just skydiving and want to see something along the way, so we're looking for a nice drive. We've got some recommendations already, to go through Twin Falls for example. Any other advice from people that have driven this before? We're leaving from the SF Bay Area. Nightingale 0 #4 June 21, 2004 make a detour to Yellowstone. It's the most amazing place I've seen in my life, and I've done a lot of travelling throughout the USA.

lummy 4 #7 June 21, 2004 don't stop in Nevada, oh and bring LOT'S of CD's for your long boring trip thru Nevada. And when you're doing 100+ on 80 thru Nevada, keep an eye in your rearview mirror for cars either A) closing on you or B) pacing you cause their's no good a coming if they catch you. Lastly, if you see a hitchhiker out in the middle of nowhere in Nevada, don't stop, they just escaped one of the 5 prisons in NevadaI promise not to TP Davis under canopy.. Amazon 7 #8 June 21, 2004 Quotemake a detour to Yellowstone No freakin way.. driving thru Yellowstone in the summer.. at the end of July????? They will be trapped in the traffic jam and not get out of there till the boogie is long over.
Nightingale 0 #9 June 21, 2004 nah. I've been there several summers. It's not bad at all, traffic wise, so long as you avoid the Hayden Valley. And then, it's not cars you have to worry about, but the herd of bison that's decided to nap on the road.

Nightingale 0 #11 June 21, 2004 there's a couple of restaurants in West Yellowstone that serve Bison steaks and burgers. quite yummy. if you go into the park, the prime rib and the bbq ribs at the roosevelt lodge are fabulous. and if you stay there, you can hear the wolves howling in the Lamar Valley just over the hill. Staying at Lake Lodge is a little more central, though.
livendive 8 #12 June 21, 2004 It all depends on which basic route you're planning on taking. The *shortest* route is north to Portland, northeast to Spokane, then east to Marion, but that gets you nowhere near that bridge. For an extra 40-50 miles though, you could go northeast through Nevada to Twin Falls, then up to Kalispell and back to Marion. For 50 miles further than that, you could drive north all the way to Seattle then east to Marion (again heading through Spokane)...this is the longest, but probably the "nicest" drive, with the fewest stretches of nothing to look at. You could stop in the Willamette Valley (Oregon) for wines or at Eugene Skydivers or Skydive Oregon, then hit a microbrewery or two in Portland, Mount Saint Helens/Mount Rainier aren't all that far off I-5 between Portland and Seattle, nor is Kapowsin. After Seattle, you'd cross over the Cascades, drop down through Vantage to cross the Columbia River (that you previously crossed at Portland/Vancouver), then be bored for about 100 miles till you hit Spokane. After that the scenery gets better all the way to the LP turnoff. Blues, Dave"I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)

Amazon 7 #15 June 21, 2004 That is why I suggested they just come on up here to Seattle up I-5.. and then join the caravan over I-90 thru Spokane.. doing that section of road betwixt Ellensburg and Spokane at night is a good thing... BO RING.. camp out somewhere over in Northern Idaho( sleep on the cabin cruiser I am hauling over) and finish the drive in the morning in time for a full days jumping at LP. That driving thru Nevada... is harsh... unless you want to visit the dig for the State Dinosaur at Austin Nevada I think its an isichthyosaur, from the Triassic Period but Austin NV is a bit off the beaten track for most people. Coming up I-5 they could stop at Eugene skydivers and Skydive Mollala on the way...Eugene is about 2 minutes drive off the freeway to the airport at Cresswell OR.. and Mollala is about 15 minutes off I-5 at the Woodburn OR exit. That is definately in the plans, jumping for a couple days when we get there, then take off to Glacier National Park for a day or two (or three) and then back to the boogie crazyness... steve1 5 #21 June 22, 2004 If I was you I'd come up one way and go home another. Glacier Park is more scenic than Yellowstone, but you'd see more wildlife in Yellowstone. If you get near Missoula come down to Stevensville to jump with us. Usually we jump a Cessna, but Greg Nardi will be bringing up his King Air from florida on a few weekends. There are a lot of clear water lakes to visit in the Swan and Flathead valleys. There are many outfitters available if you like to white-water raft. Looking forward to seeing you guys at Lost Prairie....Steve1
vdschoor 0 #22 June 22, 2004 Amazon, Looking at the maps (I went to AAA last night) it looks like that is actually a nicer drive to go up north, for some reason Nevada doesn't look all that exciting Thanks everyone for your recommendations, we're going to map it out this weekend or next. CanuckInUSA 0 #23 June 22, 2004 Pick up some aviation sectionals for the areas you'll be passing through. They show the heights of many As you're likely to encounter along the way. And for sure make a stop at the Perrine in TFs. But only if you've got the right gear. Do NOT huck yourself off of that span with skydiving gear. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
Nightingale 0 #24 June 22, 2004 You can see a lot of yellowstone while driving (around 10% of the park), but Glacier is much more of a hiking park, (from what I remember, roads only cover about 2%) so if you want to see a lot of it, plan on quite a bit of walking. They're both beautiful. See them both if you can.

Something to keep in mind is that if you're travelling to Logan's Pass (Going to the Sun Road) they have a vehicle length restriction in place. I tried to go through there with my little Bronco II and the world's smallest tent trailer and it was too long. If you're pulling a trailer, they won't let you into the park.
