Motorcycle Freaks! Hit me with your best stuff....

Recommended Posts

So I just bought my first bike. A second hand 86' Yamaha XJ700S (or SC) Maxum. (Don't know which it is and am looking for how to find out.) Price was right and the thing is in great condition.

So motorcycle fanatics hit me with the most important or favorit websites you have.....

(anyone know much about older Yamahas?)

Hey Diablo - good choice for a first scooter! Everyone has their favorites - mostly determined by their experience - but Yamaha makes a good bike, and they always have. Valve adjustments usually average about every 15,000 miles which is great. They run good, they're reliable, but most importantly, their fuckin' fun:) Other than that, have a great time with your new toy. Riding's a source man. Nothing compares to it:)
Keep the shiny side up,
Z

I'm more of a sportbike guy, but these should get you started.:)
www.msf-usa.org <--This should be your FIRST stop. Do not pass go, do not collect $200. Hit this first.

www.cycleforums.com Good mix of links and information

www.motorcyclecloseouts.com/ Great place to find cheap gear.B|

Congrats on your purchase. Seems to be a lot of us either getting into motorcycles, or in my case, getting back into it.

Keep the rubber side down and remember that everyone driving a cage is trying to kill you.:|

Yeah I think I done good. Runs great, 30K miles, needs a new rear tire in the soonish future (some small cracks from sitting) oil, and plugs planned, need to fix the switch for the tail light that connects to the rear brake, re-upholster the seat, and replace the hand grips...... Sounds pretty easy other than the tire.

Don't forget to check the fork oil/seals, and get that suspension setup adjusted to suit *you*.

*but also wondering if cruisers have rebound and damper adjustments like sportbikes do...*

Anyway, if it has them, set them.

And get your hands on a service manual for it. They're invaluable.

LMAO - Yeah, lane splitting is leagal in CA - but have you seen the size of the freakin' road turtles they have on the freeway???? Not to mention the fact that I saw a dude on a sweet custom get a cup of coffee in his face last week while I was workin' in San Jose - Poor dude was just slinkin' in between the cars and someone had to dump their coffee out da window - it was actually pretty funny - for me any way he he ;)

Don't mess around on getting that tire replaced. You get caught in the rain with an old tire and it isn't going to be fun. I replace the tires on my Harley every 7500 for the rear and every 15,000 on the front.

Heh, yeah, I've seen those turtles. They're viscious.

Just because lane-splitting is illegal here in OK doesn't mean it doesn't happen. But I pick and choose my battles carefully. My Gixxer isn't the narrowest of beasts.

I did happen to see a biker grab a face full of taco bell last year though. He was lane splitting at about 30-ish though congestion and someone pitched a half-eaten burrito out the window without knowing the biker was coming. I felt bad for the guy, but at the same time, If I was laughing any harder I wouldn't have been able to drive. :oB|

All people are out to kill you.

I'd second taking the MSF course. For me it was required since I was under 21 at the time (in Florida), but it's really useful. Compare it to AFF L1-3.

Get a manual for your bike, since you can do almost all repair and maintenance work on it yourself.

And then just ride and you'll begin to feel it.

Have fun!

A burrito? ROTFLMAO - I've been hit with a few roaches in my time and I have to say - I'll take the roach over the burrito any time he he;);)

That's great news!

You're lucky to have Chapparal cycle supply right up the road from you in San Bernadino, I think. I pass it on the way too and from Perris.

They will have every single freaking thing you need.

A set of new radial tires is the best thing, and the first thing you can get. The difference between bias ply and radials, regardless of the performance of the motorcycle is night and day.

Beat ya'.:PB|

Cheater.
Good site though, they're always giving shit away too. I still have the headlight covers I got from TrickTape (free) like 4 years ago. Good stuff.

Find the clymers or haynes manual for it, always check Ebay too - there's usually cheap parts there. Sometimes you'll get lucky and find the manual online somewhere in PDF format as well.

Some places for buying stuff...
Two thumbs up for http://www.helmetharbor.com - good prices, quick shipping.
And since you're protecting your head, might as well cover your ass too:
http://www.dragginjeans.com/

http://www.kneedraggers.com/ - usually not the cheapest (and geared more towards sportbikes) but their customer service has always been A+

If you can't find a part anywhere, chances are you'll find it at http://www.denniskirk.com

I really wish activebike.com was still around - one of the best bike sites ever.
it's like incest - you're substituting convenience for quality

Go on an MSF course now.

Get the rear tire replaced now. Don't do it yourself, unless you have the knowledge to balance it yourself. Most shops will do it for you almost free with the purchase of a tire. I personally reccomend Metzelers. Nice sticky compound.

Get it warm, change the oil and filter, then do it again at 500 and 1000 miles. This is because if it's been sat for a while, you'll have a lot of acidic breakdown in the old oil, which will eventually take it toll on the longevity of the engine. That will flush out all the old residual oil after those miles and changes. Then you can go to the normal interval.

You might want to replace the battery if it's been sat for a year or more. It will probably have difficulty holding a charge.

Old Yamaha's are OK, They run forever if you just keep them all happily full of the correct fluids.

See how nice I am to you ? And after you say all those nasty things about me ?

Hey diablopilot, if you haven't yet, check out http://www.beginnerbikes.com. Lots of good info and good folks; they helped a lot with my getting back into bikes, the way you guys are helping me get back into the air. I got a 1980 Honda CB900 Custom last September, and I'm loving it. In fact, it was that "in the breeze" feeling that got me jonesing for skydiving again!

The things you learn here....I had no idea lane-splitting was actually legal anywhere. It was commonplace when I visited Taiwan, but I never saw it enforced in the 3 weeks I was there. And it's still the best way to get free smokes. :)
Congrats, JP......and ride like you're invisible.

These are the guys I buy from.

I would wish you much enjoyment on your new bike, but that's a given. B|
