Start out with a Helmet, Jumpsuit and Altimeter...

Small and simple investments that mark a good starting point for entry level involvement...besides, who wants head lice from that fat guy on the load before ya?! ;)

thanks guys i appreciate it. my real aim is to go base jumping, but i need this first and quite a few jumps (200+) to learn good positioning and also canopy control. these things are on my bucket list. i am young enought to try and knock all the crazy fun stuff out of the way and also to keep this as my hobby.

In my humble opinion you shouldn't use a number like 200 as your entry into base. You should be mad proficient at tracking. But that number is the BARE MINIMUM for transitioning to BASE. Remember there are no reserves in base, and there is precious little time to react to a problem. Just start skydiving and I'm sure you'll figure this out yourself. But for me I spent extra money on a Bonehead Mamba full face helmet because I wanted a little extra protection because I wear contacts. So...

L&B Altitrack 350.00
Bonehead Mamba 325.00
No goggles necessary!

WARNING: This is not answer to your question seeing as its already been answered.

I remember being in the position youre in. Wanting to skydive so i could basejump, finding the means to an end (end being base). Honestly i figured id get the required minimun to attend a BASE course. Heres my advice, have fun with skydiving, its fucking awesome too, dont use it to get to base jumping. Just have fun with it bro.

Hopefully im wrong and youre not using skydiving just to get into base.

Haha true indeed.

When I did AFF all I wanted to do was freefly, and maybe BASE.

600 belly jumps later (mostly 4- and 8-way) both of those things are still on the "TODO" list.

They'll keep B|

Back on-topic though: Also consider getting a jumpsuit. If you're really keen to bang out the jumps, then having a suit that fits you well will make flying much easier. You can spend between one and five hundred dollars on one if you want to, but there's definitely a quality-vs-cost sweet spot somewhere in the middle.

Though a couple ppl have posted getting digital altimeters and full face helmets, you should check with the DZ where you're going to do AFF at. At the DZ I work and jump at students aren't allowed to wear digital altimeters, audible altimeters, and full face helmets until they are almost have their license (and you can actually start jumping your own rig if it's appropriately sized and your instructors approve of it. I started jumping my own on #22). Also you won't be allowed to wear tinted goggles until you're licensed (instructors want to see your eyes).

As for altimeters I use a Galaxy III for visual and recommend them (I have a couple of audibles too but I do like the idea of having a mechanical altimeter because I never have to worry about it running out of batteries).

Helmets, I prefer to feel the wind in my face so both my helmets are open face (bonehead mindwarp for fun and tonfly cc1 for camera).

Jumpsuits, start with an RW suit because you really should learn to fly on your belly before you freefly (mines a Bev Suit but as around the DZ to find out who's a dealer and keep in mind that it might take a month from the time you order it until you get it if it's custom made).

Those three things you can get and start jumping right away (I was jumping all three of them while a student).
