champu 1 #26 June 29, 2004 also I've played with some numbers since I made that post, here's my spreadsheet. /edited to add: you'll notice if you input an altitude lower than geosynchronous (~22,284 miles) , you'll get negative tension in the tether (meaning it'll start falling to earth) and if you put in an altitude of zero and a mass of 1kg, the tension is -2.2lbs (which makes sense, cause one kg weighs about 2.2 lbs on the surface of the earth) sorry, I'm just doing "sanity checks" on my calculations
TheAnvil 0 #27 June 29, 2004 Nifty dude. Tethers produce some seriously fun dynamics problems. Haven't looked at them in quite a long time. Just a thought on this elevator thing. Let's say that an elevator was built out to LEO. Check out the velocity a satellite in a circular orbit will be travelling up there (v=sqrt(mu/r)) vs. the velocity an elevator fixed to the Earth would be travelling.Vinny the Anvil Post Traumatic Didn't Make The Lakers Syndrome is REAL JACKASS POWER!!!!!! The engineering is not new, but the material is being developed.I do not believe it will ever be done......actually hope it is never done.
