I'm disgusted.

There's this lady who came through the bank today. She is the stepmother of a very close friend of mine in high school, and she has a son who is mentally retarded. I never did like this woman to begin with, but this killed me.

She comes through the bank and starts talking to me (being a friend of her step-daughter) and I ask her "whats new"? She said "Well, I entered my son into the special olympics". I started to smile and started to say "WONDERFUL!" until I heard what she followed it up with. With a very straight, serious look on her face, she said "Hopefully that will help raise my reputation in this town".

Words cannot possibly describe the churning feeling in my stomach after hearing that. :|

Good Lord, WrongWay...I think you've heard that I have twin boys that are disabled (Autism); that woman doesn't deserve a special child. >:( Makes me sick. My hubby and I do what's best for the kids regardless of public opinion...geezus to do things in reverse is just sick and wrong...>:(

Although her motives may not be agreeable, the end result is. Be happy for the boy and let the negativity go. Go see him at the special olympics. When I was 17, my brother and I gave all our trophies (over 100), medals, and ribbons to the special olympics. It was cool to see them going to those kids. They were some of the happiest people I'd ever seen.

I agree with part of that; this event would be a good thing for the child. However, if this is the predominant attitude in the home, I feel for this young one. On the flip side of the coin and going to an extreme, there aren't exactly people lining up to adopt disabled children, so this home environment may very well be the best this kid will ever have access to...[:/] (<--Please note that I am talking about the EXTREME end; I am in no way advocating that this child be taken from his mom...attitude is a shame, but not a reason to relocate a child I wouldn't expect in this case.)

That's amazing...I bet you and your brother carry that feeling through today. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for caring about kids that are different. :)www.CureAutismNow.org they are in the photo gallery, and they also have a personal page: Joey and Derick. ;)

Until you've been a parent or worked closely in the field, you really can't judge her. Perhaps what she said came out wrong. Raising a child is hard, raising a child with special needs is a bit harder. Maybe people don't realize she does all she can for her son. Since i'm in social services, specializing in the needs of retarded/disabled people, i pretty much have seen it all. I've had to report abuse to the state and help take children away from their parents. I've seen a retarded man cry when he lost his 50 cents in a vending machine. I've also had the crap beat out of me by a retarded/mentally ill person cause he was pissed off i wouldn't give him a magazine. When dealing with such special (and often times awesome) people, you really don't always know what is gonna happen. As for the woman, it is sad that she feels she has to "prove" herself to others, but at least she's allowing her son to join in something like the special olympics. The smiles on the faces of the participants makes me cry. When they're proud and bring their medals to "work" and show them off it's an amazing feeling. Be happy that he's being allowed to take part in such a thing.

Anyhoo, i know way too much and get way to emotional about such subjects so i should shut up now.

I never did like this woman to begin with,

Something is strange about this story.

From the sounds of it, perhaps she knows that you dislike her. Is it possible that she was trying to get her point across to you in a shocking/tacky way? She was making it known that she is aware of the reputation that some of the people in town have chosen to give to her. Logically speaking, who would honestly talk of her own child in such a negative way, confiding in someone who (from your own post) "never did like the woman to begin with"? For the sake of the child, I hope that you are wrong about this, Jason.

She never knew I didn't like her because she never knew that I knew about her little secrets, which I removed by editing as I do not want to post personal information relating to their family. You must trust me on this, she's a homewrecker like you've never seen, proven by being caught in the act. I'll leave it at that.

This woman simply is not a good person, and I would not have said anything if I wasn't absolutely sure that she meant what she said. Knowing that she meant it sickens me, and there's NO excuse that you or anyone else can come up with to justify her motives. I think it's wonderful that he gets to participate in something like that, he's a good kid, he deserves it in every way. I'm happy for him. But his mother should be ashamed, and that's just the way it is. Defend her all you'd like, but think of how you would feel if you were the boy and found out your mother was only giving you an opportunity not because she cares, but because she wants to make herself look good. Say what you will, but that's just fucking disgusting in my book.

And yes, I wish I was wrong.

Edited to add and to remove some things.

Sunny, yes I know what it's like growing up in a home with a child with special needs. Do not forget that I was a special needs child.

Jason, I love children and used to be a teacher, so this story caught my attention. However, I hesitated to post to you about it. By the way, those were some smart edits...lol.

Getting back to the REAL story that we were talking about...I was trying to figure out why this person would say what she said because I chose to believe that people are basically good, not bad. I was not defending her actions if they are truly as negative as you say, but simply saying that she may have said something that was misinterpreted. If the whole town dislikes her, I was thinking that she may have been thinking that you are amongst them (and you are, perhaps with good reason, though), like you stated and was just saying something tactless to you.

I was hoping that perhaps you may have misunderstood her. I had no idea that she was such an horrid person.

The story just gets worse and worse. I may have to join you in your nausea. Poor kid. :(

So you did see the story.......

I apologize for anything personal, I was a little angry about the subject in general, not at you, and I edited as quickly as possible to take back my irrational postings.

Sorry babe, big difference between having a syndrome and having a medical diagnosis. As a child i had oral problems and vision problems, and had years and years of speech therapy and other therapies to make me talk/sound normal.

You function "normally" in today's world. You can take care of yourself, hold a job, etc. Having retardation, mental illness, spina bifida, cerebral palsy, autism, down syndrome and all the other things i deal with on a daily basis is FAR different than anything you experienced. Don't you dare ever try to say you're comparable to them in their needs. Consider yourself lucky you can balance your own damn checkbook or feed yourself.
