Need Log Cabin Advice

Recommended Posts

My wife and I just bought some property in the mountains. For the area, we think that something along the lines of a log cabin style house will look best. Do any of you have some experience and can let me know the pros and cons of this style construction? This will be our primary residence. Thanks guys
I am not the man. But the man knows my name...and he's worried

My dad's country home is the "log cabin" style where the logs are pre-made. From what i gather, there is some upkeep maintenance that periodically needs to be done to prevent the logs from cracking. Should it start, there is some wood colored plaster-like substance you have to put in to the cracks to prevent it splitting some more. I think that is the only issue.
This link points the the type he has; though not neccessairly the same company, the same materials, construction ect. .http://www.logcabinhomes.com/tour_b.html

Log homes settle. All wood shrinks as it cures, logs more so.

All windows, doors, cabinets and anything attached to the walls needs to be designed to take this into account.

If you have the raw wood inside, you will have to dust your walls.

You need to make sure that you really think about where you want you plumbing and electrical to be because once it's in it is a reall PITA to change (remodeling a log home is tougher than a stick framed house)

They look great but cost way more than a comparable stick house.
illegible usually
