The Wonders of Modern Medicine

Recommended Posts

If you are paying attention to the Weekend Numbers posts, you may have noticed I did not put an entry in the last two, though I usually do.

About two weeks ago I noticed a "floater" in my left eye that was quite large and bothersome. I made an appointment with the surgeon who did LASIK on me 4 years ago as quickly as possible. I had that appointment today.

I got bad news and good news. The bad? As I had feared, I have a tear in the retina of my left eye. Two tears actually, explaining the second floater I noticed the day before yesterday.

The good news is very good -- I am scheduled for argon laser surgery tomorrow afternoon to repair both the tears and the weak area around them. My recovery should be short and complete. I will be able to resume jumping the weekend of the 17th.

Not all that many years ago, all I would have had been able to look forward to is decreasing vision and disability, but thanks to lasers and advances in their use, this is but a minor glitch along the long road of life. I feel like hugging a researcher.

Faster horses, younger women, older whiskey, more money.

Why do they call it "Tourist Season" if we can't shoot them?
