Coke, Soda, or Pop?

Recommended Posts

Wow...I thought soda would have beat out pop. I wonder what people say in the "other" category.

It's "coke" for me, and I only drink diet coke. :P

What is so hard about calling it by it's name?

I go to the restraunt and I order a sprite - or a 7up - I don't order a coke and then get asked what kind. That woiuld be ascenine.
Just as I don't order a Orange Crush and think hmmm I wonder if she knows I want a Pepsi - I don't order a Mt.Dew and expect a Dr.Pepper - Why in any form of logic whatsoever would anyone - A N Y O N E - call a drink by any other name than what the product is marketed as - or at least something similar, like Dew Juice - or Dr P -

Hurumph -

I live in the land of people calling it "Pop" when it should very clearly be called "Soda". Mind you I dont live where I mostly grew up so that might explain the problem...

Wow, that's cool! I grew up in Texas, which, obviously is the land of "Coke," although my drink was Dr. Pepper. Never really gave it much thought. Then when I was 17 I moved to Virginia, which isn't quite as clear-cut, but is a "soda" state. I re-trained myself on that when I moved here, as well as on eliminating the use of "y'all." I wanted to fit in, you know. ;)

actually I think georgia is the land of coke :P I'm pretty sure you can be legally shot for drinking pepsi within the atlanta city limits.

I grew up near chicago and I call it soda, but now I live in SoCal, I guess I'm finally "with my people"

Yep, I live 'deep in the heart of 'coke' country'. Although I think it's a crime to call something as incredible as Dr. Pepper 'coke', but hey, it has become generic...like xerox, etc.

It was pop when I lived in Montana, but eventually switched to soda after moving to California.

What kind of Coke do you want?
Dr Pepper

seems weird.

Where's Pop? He's from Texas, ask him.

I use the term "coke" mostly when I'm asking someone if they want a drink. I'll say, "hey, you want a coke?" and they'll say something like, "sure, what do you have". It's interchangable with soda or pop to me. At a restaurant, I'll say exactly what I want for sure.

It's "Coke" no matter what flavor or brand you actually want i.e. 7-up, Dr. Pepper. It's akin to calling tissue "Kleenex."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You need to move--immediately.
Its soda, soda, soda, soda, soda!! And if you ask what kind, its gotta be a Coke. (I was totally blissed when they were handing out free Cokes in Atlanta's airport. I could learn to love that place!)~~April
It's coke, damnit . . . even if it's Pepsi (yuck, by the way). :D
See, that's just stupid. Coke is a brand. Pepsi is a brand. Coke does not mean "cola-flavored soft drink."
I also think it's stupid to call a Scott tissue a "Kleenex."
If you're talking about carbonated beverages, they are "sodas." Seltzer is not "soda," either. Pepsi, Coke, Sprite, 7-Up, Dr. Pepper -- those are all sodas. They are sure as hell not all "Cokes." To claim that they are is to try to legitimize a long-ago-made-error, which through repeated (mis)use became the norm in some (backwards) areas.
Ugh.
Besides, Coke sucks. Pepsi rocks! :)
I spent all of my life living in "Pop" counties, but somehow i call it "coke".
and for those people who say "coke is a product name, it shouldn't be used generically" they are WRONG! the products name is "Coca-Cola". notice the difference.
