as he picked up his hammer and saw.................

okay so that's nothing to do with my post... well actualy it is....... so... the car port on the rental house i rent is falling down, 3ft of snow (and years of age) put it out of commision this winter and i talked to the rental company and they said if i saved recits they would pay me to fix it... i'm happy with just doing it for cost as it gave me more of a reason to go buy a power saw...... hence the saw part... so who thinks i can build this car port and not have it fall down..... actually i have only one question as i am a decent carpenter (well besdes the details, i can follow plans fine) soo the question...... how many packs of shingles do i need to cover a 10 foot by 20 foot roof??? that is the only thing so far i have a problem with......

:)there are ( as you know ) 3 Bundles of shingles PER square... so ya' need 6 bundles..... If you lay them with the normal 4 to 5 inches of exposure..
If the roof is very slightly pitched however it may be best to reduce that exposure number to 3 inches "to the weather",,,,,increasing the overlap,,, so that water,, Ice and Snow...:o ( you did say 3 feet of snow,,, didn't you?? ) won't cause water to back up under the courses,, and get to your plywood sheathing..In that case,, get an extra bundle..Don't forget to tar paper the plywood, beneath the roofing shingles... In addition to forming a water barrier, the tar paper is also intended to "bleed" Petro Product "up" into the underside of the shingles to give them long life and added durability...
If the slope is REAL shallow,,,, might be best to use rolled roofing,,, in which case you still have 200 square feet to cover,,, and I think 90 pound roofing ( 3 foot rolls) covers 66 square feet Per....( but ya' better check on that to be sure.)
signed,,,,, a guy who's parachute is bigger than your carport roof!!! :P:)

I think you're going to need more than 6 bundles. While 6 bundles is "supposed" to cover 200 sq.ft., you will be trimming shingles to stagger each row (5 1/4," if I remember correctly); the first row is one line of shingles placed upside down directly on edge with the roof-line, then the "real first" row is placed on top with about a three inch overhang.

Having said that, its been about 15 years since I've done roofing so you might check with your local Lowe's guys.

Here's a little doodad I found for ya....

And for future references...

edited to add: You're going to need some roof felt under the shingles also.

Tool? You have tools? Me, too. Worked on a shaked roof (not shingles) that was 50 x 150 foot once. Badass slope, 100' outside by noon. We went to work at o'dark thirty...so, can I help on this project? Send me a plane ticket, Wingie, and I'm there. Heh heh heh...if I had a hammer, I'd hammer in the mornin'...wait, I DO have a hammer!

cool.... while working can you only wear a tool belt????? as for the roof, shingles are easy, no shake room for me thank you ... and this slope is very shallow so no worry of falling and if i did it would be a huge 7ft fall....lol....
