Kennedy 0 #1 July 11, 2004 OK, so we all have seen, and probably played with, a picture phone. My question, to the people that own them, is are they worth it? Are they easy enough that if you see something, you can get a pic in a second or two, or is it three menus, five buttons, then click? Also, does anyone have a video phone? Has anyoneplayed with one?witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
Slowfaller 0 #2 July 11, 2004 Before I had a digital camera I owned a picture phone. It was neat for a while but the novelty wore off quickly. When I purchased my new phone in december I opted not to get a picture phone for 2 reasons: 1. I already have a digital camera thats small enough to fit in my pocket. 2. I go to a lot of concerts and wouldn't want to be hasseled by security or not let in because they don't allow cameras (house of blues) Since you can get a pic phone for really cheap now you're not losing anything but I don't think they're all that great. Edit: All the phones I've played with have one button dedicated to the camera function so its a matter of pressing two buttons to take the picture. It takes a while depending on the phone to email them to someone video phones take too long IMO but my friend has caught some cool stuff at partys and bonfires etc.... The way i look at it is if you want to capture digital video, get a camcorder. pilotdave 0 #3 July 11, 2004 I have a picture phone. It can be nice to be able to snap a quick shot, but the quality is low (basically unusable indoors) and the picture is zoomed out so far you need to be no more than a few feet from what you're taking a picture of or it'll be tiny. Unless they improve a LOT by the time i replace my phone, i wont be getting another. Dave
Zeemax 0 #4 July 11, 2004 it depends what phones you have available over that side of the pond. I have a Nokia 6230 which i'm very happy with. picture quality is good and so is the video. For better pictures Nokia have just released the, um, cant remember the number, but it has a 1 megapixel camera on it. Do you guys do much MMS yet over there? ie texting photos/videos? its getting much bigger over here...Phoenix Fly - High performance wingsuits for skydiving and BASE Performance Designs - Simply brilliant canopies

I have the Samsung E-715. http://reviews-zdnet.com.com/Samsung_SGH_E715/4505-6454_16-30606146.html?tag=pdtl-list I took a lot of pics the first week or so and still take a few now and then. Two button pushes and you're ready to fire away with tons of memory (4MB). I've stored several dozen pics with no problem. Quality is OK for a snapshot (640 x 480) and it's pretty cool being at a boogie, snaping a fun pic and immediately sending it to an absent CRWDog. Someone posted that they were useless in indoor lighting. I don't have any experience with other picture phones, but this one works fine in even moderate indoor lighting. I got the phone without any consideration for the picture phone feature and am delighted with it performance (as a phone :). The pic option is just a pleasant bonus. Gawain 0 #6 July 11, 2004 Picture phones are very easy to use. I have the LG VX6000 (Verizon Wireless service) and it's a quick two buttons and "snap" the pic. It's then one more button to prepare to send it (where I can write a text message along with the pic, and record a voice message or insert a sound effect). I would say yeah, they're worth it. I didn't think I'd use it, but it's pretty handy and can always be fun. I could be wrong, but I believe that the video msg phones can only send "video messages" to another "video capable" phone. So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! I was going to duct tape a video phone to my helmet to do some camera flying. Matt A well-informed person is somebody who has the same views and opinions as yours. Slowfaller 0 #8 July 12, 2004 Just make sure you have at least 200 jumps and use lots of gaffers tape to tape snag points (antenna etc) CHris --"Someday you will die and somehow somethings going to steal your carbon" -MM
