Why I love this Sport...

Recommended Posts

On the walk to the plane and ride to altitude for my check out dive on friday... first time up in a Porter, dude that thing has a huge door, but I digress...

I was talking to one of the tandum students and she pointed out that it was the first time she had ever been in an airplane. I told her that I thought it was awesome that she was choosing to jump out of her first airplane ride...

She appeared to be having a blast (no whuffo on that airplane...)

Just thought I'd share... I thought it was the coolest...

Those who jump out of a plane the first time they have ever been in one : I envy that . It's way cool. But on the other hand i feel sorry that they have never been in a plane until now.
I see it a few times a year andit always makes me smile and light up.

BEEEEEEEEEEERRRRR!!!!!! B| I would be fine with a DOCTOR PEEEEEEEPPPPER!!!! Sorry, after that 'skydiving pet peeve' post, I couldn't resist.

Yea, I love porters, those babies rock. I describe a turbine porter as a mosquito with a rocket strapped to it's back.

Glad you continued. So how many airplane landings do you have ?:)

Sheenster303 has never landed in a plane, to my knowledge. I know FOR CERTAIN that her first tandem was her first time in a plane, and she has 50-something jumps now. People like that rock. B|

And me, personally, I'm still terrified of planes. Getting on a commercial flight tomorrow, and I'm scared to death. :D

The title of this post reminded me of one Kevin O'Connell made to rec.skydiving about 6 years ago. Those of you who didn't play around over there missed out on some amazingly good posts by Kevin. Anyhow, quoted below is his post of the same title (quoted without his permission of course)

Quote

I can remember walking across campus on a nice fall day. Joe looked across that table that all the groups had and said "Kevin, if you're gonna design airplanes, ya better learn how to jump outta them.". They had some gear there, some pictures, magazines, etc. They were having a meeting that night and Slyde was going to tell us what was involved.

They had the usual cokes and cookies of these "callouts". And quickly, they started the movie "From Wings Came Flight". It was beautiful. Those folks looked like they were having sooooo much fun. All these folks on the back of a Beech. That guy who taught a whole generation of skydivers how to do a back in wrong... But boy he did it sweet. But I wasn't hooked yet.

So I was talked into going on down to south of Indy to a grass strip, a bunch of shacks that made my garden shed look sturdy, and an old Beaver. Paid my $115 dollars for my FJC and my first 5 SL and a single Freefall. (Package deal for students). I spent the whole morning in training with some old version of Bill Booth. He spent the morning trying to scare the heck out of us. Almost worked too. But by the afternoon, after doing too many PLF's off an old jump platform, the winds picked up and students were grounded (15 mph I think).

I spent the night at someones apartment I didn't know, as did most of the other skydivers. Drank ALOT of beer (oh, little did I know) and watched a bunch of the skygods play a game called "starfire" which, even through the beer, I knew too much electrical engineering to play.

The next day, I made the fatefull jump. But I have to admit, that as much fun as it was, I wasn't hooked yet. Made a few more and then winter came. We went to Florida over spring break and Jimmmy Godwin worked us into his training program and pretty soon most of us were into 10 and 15 second delays and getting ready for graduation. I took the girl friend to the beach a few days and didn't quite make it. Once spring came to Indiana, I went to Franklin where the DZ had moved, and showed my log book and my preparedness for my last few jumps. And within the weekend, I made all but my last. They had a rule, you couldn't graduate that weekend. You had to come back and make two graduation jumps in one weekend. So the next weekend I was there bright and early and made 'em both and I was signed off. But I wasn't really hooked yet.

And then the next day, Slyde got some god to take me up on a two way. But it wasn't going to be one of those, "I'll hang on to you and we'll fall together" kind. I was to exit first, and he would take a delay. Then he would dive down and dock on me. We did it all from 7500 for "a dollar a thousand plus 50 cents." I looked up and saw the plane, and the guy exit, and him diving down on me. He looked like superman. I SWEAR he had a cape. I thought it was beautiful. We were FLYING! I was hooked. Deep. Hard.

We love to joke and call this an addiction. Yeah, the adrenaline is cool. But to this day, I LOVE looking up the line of flight and seeing those folks "flying" down towards the base. I have
just a few skydiving photos on the wall. One is a Pink Floyd special of folks just after exit flying UP the line of flight. So is the camera and Pink was looking sideways when he shot it. They look like they are ascending into heaven. No plane, at a steep angle to the horizon, all looking up.

All of my best memories are of that view. Exiting out of the rear most trail plane on the 164 way attempts. Watching whole planes of "flying monkeys" exiting and "flying" down between me and the base. My approach to my SCS, diving down to that rock solid 11 way waiting on me. Exiting 30th on a 40 way out of a DC-3 and not being able to see the base, just watching the line-o-bodies all diving down the line of flight. Tracking off of a 12 way and looking down and "following" a hawk soaring below me. Tracking a diamond at night from the tail and breaking off and flying OVER the three of them off into the starry sky.

Its flying I love. Yeah, I know it isn't REALLY flying, but it sure looks and feels like it. I love doing cork screw tracks, I actually like turning pieces. And I still love launching a 6 way and looking back up the line of flight and watching that sky bus drive away. I don't think there is a more relaxed feeling than letting go of the airplane. I love tracking OVER a cloud. I like "following" a line of trees or a river. I like looking over and seeing the other guy tracking away. I love exits when everything is still so 3-D and you "fly" up, over, around and back down to a slot.

I love it. I love the sport. I love flying. And every once in a while I have to remind myself SPECIFICALLY what I love about this sport. God, I love to fly.

Y'all should check kelly out if you're ever on the jump plane with her. It's a pretty funny sight to behold! I've never seen a skydiver so freaked out on the plane ride up before. :D :P

Yup I've never landed in a plane before! I'm way too freakin scared to land in it! I have to jump out! :D

It's funny because I have been in five different planes now, but have never landed any of them. The first time I was in a plane was my first tandem and I jumped out of a King Air. It was so funny because the one thing I kept thinking on the way up was how the cars all looked like matchbox cars. I was so fixiated on it especially while I was under canopy. I'm kept telling my TM "look at how small everything is!" I'm such a dork.
I'm so funny I crack my head open!

I was so excited last week. The navy was flying me down to a naval air station in a C-12 (military kingair 200). I've probably done 40 or 50 kingair jumps but never landed in one, and was finally gonna get the chance.

When I got to the airport, they had a piper navajo waiting for us. Guess a kingair 200 is a little big for 4 passengers. The flight home was on a fairchild metroliner... bigger than a kingair, with only 4 passengers. They were picking up a big group after dropping us off.

I've landed in a twin otter once when I went along for an oberver ride. Man that's a fun approach! Takeoffs scare me a lot more than landings...

I also jumped out of the first plane I went up in.
I was doing a SL Progression with my Dad out of a 152. Never been in a Plane before, Get to altitude (3K) and he goes first and has a bad landing on the runway (We were jumping Piglet 23 Rounds). We have to land the plane to see if he is alright (Once we get someone on the ground to help get him off the runway). Then I get go back up and make my Jump. So I technically had 1 landing before I actually jumped but I did jump out of the first plane I was ever in.

I used to love commercial flight, now I'm nervous when I board a plane that doesn't have a door you can just swing (or slide) open during flight...what's wrong with those airline people? :P

It is kind of weird though, I can watch the tape of my first jump (AFF 1) and remember how 'wrong' I thought it was when I looked out of the door of a plane for the first time.

Now looking out that door is natural, NOT having that door ISN'T natural.

I know what you mean! WRONG is the perfect word to describe how I felt about that first jump. :D Now it's the exact opposite.

Kelly

I'm not sure I'd want a jump door on a 717/737/MD-80 at 38,000 ft... gives me the chills thinking about how cold it would be... not to mention that everyone would have to be on Oxygen... talk about logistics...

personally I didn't think anything was wrong with the concept of getting out of the aircraft... and I never did a tandum... maybe someday... but only if I can drive...

"Man, z-hills looks really small from here."
"Umm...we're only at 2000 ft."
;)

Insert Skydive Atlanta in there and that's exactly how it was. :D

I started at MAYTOWN(wedged in 4 farms).
I opened and..... "Crap! where am I!?! ...I'm lost!"

I had somewhere around 400ish jumps before i ever landed in a plane. First landing was a 182 cause at about 800ft the pilot noticed we were leaking gas. Seems whoever fueled the plane didn't put the fuel cap back on. Since then, i've flown commercial a bunch and i love going for airplane rides.
