ScubaSteve 0 #1 July 13, 2004 I just made appointment for MRI for a thigh injury sustained during a hard opening. I cannot get open MRI on that part of leg and am stuck with the tube. They said it will take 75min. Is was ok with it until the screening. They asked about metal in eyes? I have welding history so I guess I have to get a head x-ray first. They also recomended Valum..lol. Just wondering what I got myself into. I am such a wuss....
turtlespeed 226 #2 July 13, 2004 Just sit back - relax - take the valium - it's a very long ride - and if you are clausterphobic - then - well - it's gunna suck! - other than that - enjoy the ride and imagine it is the longest ride to altitude you ever had.I'm not usually into the whole 3-way thing, but you got me a little excited with that. - Skymama BTR #1 / OTB^5 Official #2 / Hellfish #408 / VSCR #108/Tortuga/Orfun
mouth 0 #3 July 13, 2004 I took me two doses of valum and two tries to get through it. If you can relax it will be fine but it was IMPOSSIBLE for me to relax. -- Hot Mama At least you know where you stand even if it is in a pile of shit.
wildcard451 0 #4 July 13, 2004 You should be fine if you are ok with enclosed spaces. I had a full brain MRI/MRA last year and was in the tube for about an hour. I just went to sleep on and off, getting woken up by the noise every now and again. As far as the metal goes, they'll screen you well for that. You'll be just fine. And if not, a little valium should do the trick nicely.
bbarnhouse 0 #5 July 13, 2004 Yeah, and take some relaxing music with you...they'll be happy to play your favs.
lauras 0 #6 July 13, 2004 Make sure the tech puts a towel over your eyes - if you fall asleep and wake up startled to find yourself in the tube, you'll have to start all over again. Sounds silly, but the towel really helps settle you down.
lawrocket 3 #7 July 13, 2004 Yeah, a couple of times. Back in 1984 when they thought I had brain cancer. I also had a sinus infection and it gave me an awful headache. it was pretty neat that the tech was able to say, "There's your headache." I also had one on my messed up knee about 18 months ago. Yeah, they suck. You gotta sit still, and for me that was the worst part - keeping an already hurting knee in an uncomfortable position for an hour. I wasn't offered valium or any sedative, but if you think your leg may bother you keeping it still for a long time, i'd recommend you try it. that damned thing is loud and cramped. Get ready. My wife is hotter than your wife.
Muenkel 0 #8 July 13, 2004 At the very worst, it's just long and tedious. The most annoying part is the banging sounds. If you try to put yourself into a meditative state, it will help tremendously. If you are nervous, go for the valium. Remember, it could be worse....you could be going in for a colonoscopy. Good luck. Remember, it's not that bad. _________________________________________ Chris
ladyskydiver 0 #9 July 13, 2004 Just got one on Friday (2nd one in my lifetime). They are loud! Valium is recommended when you're stuck in the tube just so you don't freak out because you have to lay still during that whole time. No biggie...relax. Life is short! Break the rules! Forgive quickly! Kiss slowly! Love truly, Laugh uncontrollably. And never regret anything that made you smile.
craichead 0 #10 July 13, 2004 Yup, I had one about a month ago for my dislocated shoulder--half my body was in the tube for about an hour (it's difficult to gauge the passage of time in those things). I'm not claustrophobic, so it wasn't a big deal. I was pretty bored and found myself picking out the different "jackhammer" tones of the scanning to pass the time. The biggest challenge for me was trying to ignore all of the itches that suddenly started when the machine started scanning. Also, I felt like my muscles were involuntarily twitching a lot, but the techs said I was perfectly still. _Pm__ "Scared of love, love and aeroplanes...falling out, I said takes no brains." -- Andy Partridge (XTC)
MarkM 0 #11 July 13, 2004 Had an open one back in December, they're not that big of a deal. Mostly loud as the machine makes a lot of banging. After the first couple mins when you finally realize that all the metal fillings in your teeth aren't going to go flying out of your mouth, you'll start to relax. They also injected me with a chemical that helps the MRI. That was probably the worst part, as I don't like having a needle stuck in my arm.
GiaKrembs 0 #12 July 13, 2004 I had one about 2 years ago - the Doctors were trying to rule out mini strokes. Not sure how long I was in there but, it didn't bother me at all.... the tech kept worrying, and asking if I was okay. I actually thought the noises were interesting - afterwards I told the tech that I felt like I was at a rave party listening to techno... The tech got a good chuckle out of it! Good luck! marcandalysse 0 #14 July 13, 2004 I had one last month for my knee, I only had to put my legs into the tube, from waist up I was out of the tube....I wore a pair of earplugs, and ended up dozing for most of the process. Best wishes for a speedy recovery! Marc

cvfd1399 0 #16 July 13, 2004 Lmao I just got back from having the same metal in the eye speach. The MRI is not that bad. I have to get one in a week for my knee. I will have gone to the doctor 3 times for the same problem. 1.Initial visit+x-ray(why take a x-ray for a ligiment) 2.For the MRI(what I knew I needed in the 1st place) 3.To review the results of the MRI with him 4.Possible Surgery 5.Possible Post surgery visits 6.Possible Rehab At least the doc got me to make a house payment for him
Rdy2skydive 0 #17 July 13, 2004 I had an MRI a few years ago for a hip injury and had to go into the tube too. It wasn't that bad since my head was sort of close to the end of the tube but I do recommend taking valium (or any drug that will make you very relaxed or sleepy) beforehand. I would also advise you to have the test done as early in the morning as possible. Stay up as late as you can and go a little drowsy and drugged. It's a long test but being sleepy with a towel over your eyes will make it a better experience. Good luck and hope everything's okay.
