If I try to understand this as well, I may forget how to drive. As you may have guessed, I'm a layman at this stuff, so I'm free to admit that lots of it is completely fucking impenetrable. I always thought that information about what emitted the radiation could be recovered by analizing that. Like reading the color of a flame, or smoke particles of a fire to determine what is burning.
