Why doesn't the freezer have a light?

Recommended Posts

I guess if you open the fridge at the same time as the freezer then the light from the fridge will shine into the freezer.

Or maybe the people who made the freezer figures that you wouldn't be getting anything out of the freezer that you would need in the middle of the night.

I'm going to guess that at some time in the distant past somebody put one in and it didn't last very long because of the temperature swings.

My further guess is that today they don't do it because of corporate inertia -- in other words, "we've never done it in the past, why start now?"

That sounds like a Microsoft interview test question.:S:)
My guess is that the heating/cooling cycle that an incandescent lamp would experience in a freezer would be too much for it to take. It would also collect ice on its surface, which would melt / freeze / melt / freeze.

It would have to be embedded in a wall to protect it from the temperature extremes, but this would have three negative effects--

1. Compromise the insulation
2. Be made difficult to change if needed
3. Add to manufacturing costs.

I suppose the newest freezer units have white LED lamp assemblies in them, which are cheap to make, don't require insulation, don't don't go through the heat/cold cycle, and will last longer than the unit itself.

I lived in Montana where the temperature ranges from 110 degrees to -60 degrees

First hand experience tells me that lights work at a much chillier temperature than your freezer will ever get too.

My guess is, most freezers are small and it would take up space?
