Why skydivers are great! (the story of the lost ring)

Recommended Posts

Yup, it happened this weekend.

While at Skyfest, my fiance lost her engagement ring while packing. Since its a solitare diamond, she takes it off and puts it in her pocket while she's packing then will put it back on when she's done. She's also a paid packer, so she's packing a lot.

Well, Saturday she caught me between tandems and was almost in tears, told me she couldn't find her ring. Although I was trying to explain to her that 1) Its only money and 2) its fully insured, she was still quite upset to say the least.

We happened to be in manifest during this and the manifester held up the ring and asked if this was the engagement ring we lost.

Sure enough, it was the ring.

Basically a Skydiver found the ring and turned it in to manifest.

Whats nice about this is how I look at it. Finding a ring like that, it is obvious it is worth a considerable amount of money (especially for a broke college student skydiver). When I was thanking the finder, he mentioned that he would hope someone would do the same if he had been in our shoes, since he knew what the ring was and knew it definately meant something to someone.

Don't worry, he was properly thanked.

A very very special thanks goes out to Flyangel2 who helped me with a proper thankyou.

(no you damned dirty skydivers it had nothing to do with nudity, sex or otherwise, it was a very caring gift from a friend).

a similar thing happened to me this weekend, Money for all of us is tight, Im back in college full time and working a job that doesn't pay a whole lot. I managed to scrape together a little over 100.00 to get some jumps in for this past weekend. I was down at Titusville and sometime after my first jump, I lost 100.00 bill, I was sick I figured my weekend was done and started gathering my gear. Just for the hell of it, I checked at manifest, someone found and turned in my money. Thank God for honest people!

Now if somebody would just find my gold rope chain with St Christopher medal and crucifix lost at Skydive Dallas...

Likewise with a lost ProTrack (or two). Those don't seem to get returned by skydivers as it's easy for them to use it or sell it as opposed to a lost engagement ring. But myself and a friend (who also lost theirs) are ultimately to blame for losing our respective ProTracks on different weekends and at different DZs. :S

I found a mans wedding ring walking home from the bars last week. It was just on the sidewalk and I nearly stepped on it. Doesn't have a name or anything on it though, wish I could return it as I'm sure the dude is in major trouble, especially seeing as it was found in the bar district...

I was pretty sick when I walked into manifest and was very suprised to find that someone had turned in my ring. It is amazing to think what a great family we have in skydiving that someone would be that giving.

Thanks to everyone who helped me look for it and to Mary for helping us thank the guy who turned it in.

Morgan

If it were me, I would put up some signs in the area that say "found man's wedding ring with mycell phone # " If someone called,I'd ask him to describe it.

Yeah.. then he'll have to explain to his wife how his ring fell out of his pocket while he was a the bars.

It's called good Karma:)
Funny how things work out. Once I found out it was John who turned it the ring, it didn't surprise me. John, one great kid. I'm just glad that I was able to pay it forward. Turns out, John is in the San Marcos area and will use that certificate to it's full potential.

I found a ring (one of those 3-band/3-colors of gold rings) in my neigborhood, and did exactly that.

Never got an answer, so what goes around comes around, and I have a nice ring now

There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

Yesterday on one of my stops on my road trip, I found a check book. I just now called the guy and asked him if he wanted me to mail it to him, or if he closed the account. Turns out the guy didnn't even know it was missing.
