ypelchat 0 #1 July 28, 2004 This spring, i bought a Linksys wireless kit, on Ebay. The kit has a PCMCIA wireless card, and a wireless router. I set-up the kit last night, and now I am sitting in my backyard, about 100 feet away from the router, and i'm enjoying the sun, while browsing the internet. Yves. WFFC 1 #3 July 28, 2004 Don't forget to change the password on the router and setup WEP.

beowulf 1 #6 July 28, 2004 it would be a good idea to setup MAC list access. So that it forces anyone trying to get access to your wireless to have to spoof your MAC address.
mattjw916 2 #7 July 28, 2004 along with a tin-foil hat I'm sure.... MAC addy ACLs are a little overkill for home use IMO... unless you have something to steal/hide. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080

Or from using your pipe. I don't mind sharing with friends, but not any unknown neighbors.
mattjw916 2 #9 July 28, 2004 I shut my machines off during the day anyway... I used to leave them on all the time, not anymore though. WEP is good enough, for the most part, but I don't even use that anymore... I stumbled my apt complex and there were no other 802.11b signals so I am not too worried. Of course, if I lived in a dorm or something, it would be a different story. NSCR-2376, SCR-15080

WEP takes all of 10 sec to set up on any machine you add to the network... and you dont need access to the router to add MAC addys.. as long as you use 128 bit and dont pick obvious pass phrases its secure enough from your average hacker..anyone who can get thru it easily wouldnt have much trouble spoofing your MAC addresses either..____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed. mnealtx 0 #11 July 29, 2004 I've got a wireless card for my PDA... can you say "surfing dz.com at the frankfurt airport while I wait for my next flight?" I knew you could! I think that's gonna be a lot easier than lugging the laptop back and forth... thinking about setting the house up on wireless once we get DSL or cable into our area.Mike I love you, Shannon and Jim.
