Icon134 0 #1 August 2, 2004 OK, so I've been thinking about getting a part time job to help pay for my addiction... I'm military (and an officer) so I probably have to ask permission... I've worked as a cook before and like to do that... but I'm not sure I would be able to swing working on only MWF evenings and/or Sundays. I only just learned how to pack... and I've never actually been to Skydive Alanta but it is a lot closer to me then ASC and I would enjoy the experience gained (not to mention the potential for getting under a riggers wings and becoming a senior or master rigger...) I only say Best Buy because... it would augment my other addiction of being around cool toys... I'm open to other suggestions... (only legal ones please...) Its not all about money... I also would like to have more to do in the evenings/weekends instead of sitting at home in front of the TV. Scott course I might not bother w/it... towerrat 0 #2 August 2, 2004 The problem you have with packing is that, you just learned, the people at Atlanta don't know you, if you could get customers you wouldn't be fast enough to make any real money for a while. I would suggest a retail job until you can get your packing up to speed, and you will need to be familiar with more than just one type of rig. It's pretty hard to learn on a very busy matt. I can be done, but you'll make faster money just getting a job at first, and then maybe packing during the week at a DZ if you can.Play stupid games, win stupid prizes! Icon134 0 #4 August 2, 2004 I should probably point out that I don't actually expect to get a job as a packer... I put it up because it is the only thing related to skydiving that I could think of to make additional money... I am employed full time...

jdhill 0 #6 August 2, 2004 Given that you are an Officer, second jobs of any real nature are most likely out of the question... both in that your chain of command will most likely not approve it, and your responsibilities will not allow you the time (depends on what you do in the mil)... if you can get a gig packing when you are there, go for it... peregrinerose 0 #7 August 2, 2004 You'll do better financially in retail if you work someplace that gives commission. With no experience I worked at a chain optical place selling glasses. Made about $7.50 per hour plus commission which typically doubled the hourly wage, sometimes more. Not bad for a part time job. GARYC24 3 #9 August 2, 2004 I suggest security guard. Maybe even armed security guard. I see ads for them all the time in my area. (ca) I just quit a part time pizza job. I decided NOT to put 800 mi a month on my truck, It's great for short term, after 1 year, it's not worth the wear & tear!
jdhill 0 #10 August 2, 2004 It largely depends on what said officer's job is... but if they are in a leadership role, their responsibility is to the troops, 24/7... not split with a part time job... If they are a staff guy... they could very well have after / off hours responsibilties that make it difficult to keep a schedule with another employer... I have no troops and I work with a bunch of civilians that come to work somewhere between 7-9 and leave by 5... On rare occations I do have to work longer hours when I am playing war (with my calculator and engineering paper...) I have know people to have some small part time type work and still be successful even as an officer. I am think about selling my rowing machine (anybody want one? Concept II model C in great condition...PM2+ monitor, interfaces w/a computer.) As with any employment it is largely due to the employer/employee relationship... As an officer I wouldn't even consider something like this if I didn't feel as if I had the time to do it... but I spend enough time sitting around my apartment in the evening that it just doesn't make sense not to consider it.
