website help

[yoink 321]

I've got a problem that's really bugging me now and maybe someone can help...

we've got a company website which I'm responsible for. (www.adeptmanagement.com) I can't see this site accessing the web normally. No-one in the office can - I get a 404 Error.

I can access the site through a proxy though...

Pinging the web name gives: Ping request could not find host www.adeptmanagement.com. Please check the name and try again.
Pinging the ip works.

What have I got set up wrong? It feels like a DNS problem, but we've had no trouble with any other sites...

it's getting a little embarassing - please help.

See if you enter the IP on your browser you get to the page, if you do, it means the DNS is messed up somewhere.

do an nslookup on the site from the inside

if that doesn't yield the IP address for the site then you are having a DNS problem. If it does then you are having some kind of routing problem.

Also, just by looking, if he trys to access the site using its public IP its not going to work, I think its a Virtually hosted site. You get an ISP site if you just punch up the IP

Nah you can do the same thing with apache. I run like 5 websites with my linux box and they all resolve to the same IP. If you don't type in the name in the bar you get the default site.

How many folks do it with Apache do you think? Let me rephrase that...how many ISPs do you think do it with Apache?

The ones I've seen give you IIS with FrontPage extensions, since that's what everyone "wants."

A lot of the "bargin" priced ones do it that way. Its the only way they can afford to host sites for 4.99 a month or some silly price like that.

That's a good point. The licensing on a large IIS server with lots of sites, etc, get pretty expensive. The kind of expensive that makes you want to kick microsoft in the nutz.

Sounds like a firewall issue. If the server is behind the same firewall you are, you will not be able to access your webpages using the outside IP for the server. Try using the internal server address to access the webpage.
