yeah, Tom Ridge (the homeland security guy) said financial buildings in NYC are targets, and my building and the stock exchange were mentioned specifically. they said terrorists knew how thick the window glass was, how many people fit into the elevator and how many people walk by the building at certain times of the day. Helicopters flying around the building today and cops are all over.... kinda freaky.

I know it sounds weird to talk about quiting a job over this - I'm mostly joking. Just a little stressed thinking about another 9/11.

I only joke about base jumping out of the building. My guess is that I wouldn't have enough time to do it if anything happened. Probably better to try to take the stairs or wait for help. But thanks for the input

perhaps when people assumoing things that can get other people killed yes that can sure obset a person.Read between his lines, what does he tell you??Read the head tread here...He ask if you guys think he could jump it and survive(my guess),then you cant use shit about people estimating a high that might kill them...

OK... lets read between the lines... the guy has zero knowledge of base jumping... telling him he can survive it is not good advise in the first place... jumping out of a building that is on fire, or is about to fall is liekly to kill you anyway... your chances of surfing a piece of sheetrock down are as good... JP and I commented on someone elses assumption of the height, based on Eropean construction... the original poster asked about a specific building in the US, where the standard floor is 14 ft. for that type of construction... neither of us said he should jump from that height, or said anything about BASE at all... who's assuming what here?

Correct... it is a rare case that both are blocked, yes it happend on 9/11, but that is not the norm...

so what does you say?? that he should get gear?

bottom line is that he asked if he should do it,i wont recomend him to do so.take the 50ft diff and fly away, you cant use it for shit.Hell i wont recomend him to jump below 300ft anyway.

Trying to be realistic to this guy a i cant belive that some of you would advise him to do so just becourse it can be done.. would you also recomend him to fly a vx 46 if he wanted??

To the main poster.I DO understand your concern, its just so far out to me that i cant realice it for real, sorry. As said i wont recomend you to jump such a system, but im me and i dont deside over you or your life.IF you think you in an eventful attach can think clear and only use the devise as last way out,and still doing it correct under that stress yes then i think you could use it,but i even doubt that many BASE jumpers would be abel to do that aswell.

anyway i hope any terroists gets confused about their explosives and blow them self up somewere they cant harm any others.>:(

I never said he should get gear... in fact if a later post I agreed with his own comment that he is better off taking the stairs.

Building floors are different heights from building to building, not just country to country. I've jumped two 37 story buildings, a few blocks apart, one of which measured 435' at exit, and the other of which measured 358'. Counting floors is a horribly inaccurate way to estimate altitude. Especially when your counting less than 20 floors. Down there, the difference in altitude could make for a very bad day.

This is, in my opinion, the best tested of the "building escape" rigs.

I'd guess that from the 15th floor, it would be able to get you to the ground reasonably safely (meaning, you'd likely survive, perhaps with some broken bones, depending on your landing area and obstacles).

Still, if you really want to know, you ought to just contact one of the NYC BASE jumpers. They'd probably be more than willing to check out your possible escape routes in exchange for you letting them into the building after hours. ;)
