nws01 0 #1 July 28, 2004 I met with a recruiter today. I went and bought my ASVAB study book and I take the test next week. If everything goes well I go to boot camp next month. Anyone out there been through it and can tell me what to expect? Thanks, Nathan

turtlespeed 226 #8 July 28, 2004 Politics Study hard - your general requirements are important and will help you if you know them by heart. Stay away from Deck Seamanship and make sure you get yourself an A school if not a C school. Learn what PMS really is. DO NOT TRUST YOUR RECRUITER - EVER! Make sure someone that has been through the deal is with you when you sign up for your schools. Make sure it is what you want to do. nws01 0 #10 July 28, 2004 27 is the cut off for the Air Force. 34 for Navy, Army or Marines. I figure at my age and the fact that I want to go into Air Traffic Control so I can utilize my training when I get out the Navy is my best bet.

juanesky 0 #15 July 28, 2004 When you are down, don't forget the reason you joined. It can be tough going through boot camp. The objective is you learn the Navy ways. Just make sure you read your contract throughly, emphasis on your rate, or as to where your rate will be specified (rate= your specialty)."According to some of the conservatives here, it sounds like it's fine to beat your wide - as long as she had it coming." -Billvon

JohnnyD 0 #19 July 28, 2004 You can get the school you want guaranteed. That's about all you are going to get. Make absolutely certain you have a guaranteed school in your contract. Other than that, the biggest problem I had with bootcamp (Marines) was the lifestyle adjustment. It was the one thing I wasn't prepared for. From the second you wake up to the second you go to sleep, its nonstop. I was good with the physical parts and the mental parts, but I guess I never considered not sitting in a chair for more than 5 minutes at a time for 3 months. Some parts of it may actually be enjoyable - make sure you relish those, because the parts that aren't will definitely outweigh them. edit: good luck and thank you (in advance)
mattjw916 2 #20 July 28, 2004 Well, I was Army for 8 years... the key to the military is LOTS of patience and tolerance. Don't take anything personal, it usually isn't worth it anyway. You get out of it, what you put into it. Personally, I would start working out regularly starting NOW, if you don't already. It will make your life much easier.NSCR-2376, SCR-15080
nanook 1 #21 July 28, 2004 Just as said above. the recruiters have to meet a quota or else! Don't trust them. 1. See if there's an enlistment bonus for your chosen rate and ask for the max. The highest I have heard for my rate was 10,000 but you have to enlist for 6 years(get a "C" school). 2. make sure you have a Rate. (you will go to "A" school for basic Rate knowledge) or you are deck seaman fodder and you may need to extend your contract to get a rate in the future. 3. You are not in the navy till you sign papers AT THE RTC (boot camp). so if you decide "no" after the lenghty MEPS check ups, you can tell them to eat a dick. 4. make sure your finances are in order before boot camp. 5. you never smoked a joint in your life; and no, they can't prove it!! 6. If you have a degree or if you are in college, screw the recruiter and look for NROTC at your campus. Recruiters do not recruit for officers and you have to spend the first couple(or all of you enlistment) becoming one. 7. alot of people on here are in the Navy. Ask a lot of questions! When you are in the navy: -Positive attitude always get you everywhere. -as with everywhere, the first person who immediately wants to be your friend at a new command is to be avoided. you, the new person, don't know what an ass hat he is and he knows it. good luck and dont sweat the bullshit. There's lot's of it._____________________________ "The trouble with quotes on the internet is that you can never know if they are genuine" - Abraham Lincoln

It happened for me. Pull your weight, but don't make the rest of your team look like shit in the process. Nothing wrong with being an Honor Grad, but don't screw your neighbor in the process. -Don't do anything stupid, like marry the first girl who smiles at you. I cannot tell you how many first-term Airmen I've inprocessed that already have a Tech school marriage & annulment in their PIF. Don't buy a car from a lot just off base. Those "We Finance--E1 & up!!" guys are not to be trusted. Have a SNCO/Chief help you with a car purchase once you get to your first station/ship. -Don't think you're too slick to get caught by the SP/NCIS for stupid things. The UCMJ is a cruel bitch if you fuckup. Don't wear long hair/hippy clothes to Indoc day...(i.e. don't be a shit magnet) Learn to spit polish now. It'll help. Remember--You will NOT succeed alone. baa75 0 #24 July 28, 2004 Quotebought my ASVAB study book I have never heard of anyone actually buying a book to study for the ASVAB. Its kind of like the SATs if you remember them. They test you on different skill areas. (Math, reading, construction, medical, etc) Your scores in the different areas help them decide which job to push you into. There's a qn with pics of different nails and it asked which one was the roofing nail and I didn't know. I remember thinking, I can't tell my grandfather that I didn't know this one. (He owns a roofing company!) I agree completely with the "Don't trust a recruiter" I was married to someone in the Air Force and was already living on base and they STILL tried to talk me into jobs I didn't want. Like I didn't know what they were doing. The lifestyle adjustment is the hardest. Just keep in mind that nothing is personal and they are just doing their job in training you. That helped me. I hated the first 3 weeks but got used to it and actually liked the rest. I'd do it again. I could use to get in shape anyway. Oh yeah, if you don't already run or do sit ups start now. It can only make things easier for you. You will have to keep up with guys 10 years younger than you! BettyAnn Getting married? Check out my website!
