AndyMan 7 #52 August 5, 2004 QuoteThe reason Americans do not want to see an obese woman in a tiny tube top is b/c our standards here set by the vicious circle of us and the media say that fat is unattractive. I don't think you can blame it on the media. Historically, in times of starvation - being big is attractive. In times of "plenty", being thin is in style. The odd thing is that the western world is experienceing whats basically now 3 generations of relative prosperity, something thats effectively never been seen before. Being "big" hasn't been in style for an awefull long time, and hopefully never will again. _Am__ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
PLFXpert 0 #53 August 5, 2004 QuoteBeing "big" hasn't been in style for an awefull long time, and hopefully never will again. At least our standards are getting better, now, though, with new models and idols and stars who are more healthy-shaped, then looking like a rail with limbs. And just for the records, skinny girls get made fun of just as much as fat ones. I can't count the # of times I've been told to eat a burger. And I do, all the time, so hate me for it, people (not meant to be taken seriously) (edited for spelling)Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back. happythoughts 0 #54 August 5, 2004 Two women in their 30's talking: "I can't believe she's dressing like I did when I was her age." I remember the 70's. Bikinis made out of yarn, knitted tighter in some spots. The limits of proper dress are usually determined by women who see another women dressed in an outfit that won't fit them. Remster 30 #56 August 5, 2004 QuoteMini-skirts that were shorter than anything I see worn today. Those skirts were so impossibly short that a girl could not sit in any position with any thought of propriety. You obviously live in a shorts skirt deprived area Bill. I've seen underwear from women standing... never mind sitting (and I'm not talking about thongs sticking out from the top of the skirts... lol)Remster

wmw999 2,588 #58 August 5, 2004 Excellent post. I'm plus-sized by Hollywood standards (the vast majority of the women on dz.com are). To me, that's a terrible standard, because it sets the standard at the low end of ideal. It's like saying that the only acceptable grades to be proud of in school are A+. I don't see the same "me" in the mirror that others see. But whether that "me" is fatter and older, or younger and thinner with better skin is up to me. And if I wear something someone else thinks I shouldn't due to age or whatever else, well, tough shit. gjhdiver 0 #61 August 5, 2004 QuoteHey! Ladies. If you have to look way out over your belly to see your toes the latest midrif exposed look that Britney or Christina are sporting JUST might not be for you, ok? Put on a full shirt, they don't cost any more. (Note: not directed at anyone I know personaly.) Tell me about it. I see women here who must have taken time out from being hooked up to the gravy IV to get into those outfits. Just before I get slammed by the fat police, If you're a guy, and too familiar with the great taste of butter, I want you to keep your damn shirt on too. Breezejunky 0 #63 August 5, 2004 Having spent so much of my life over 200 lbs, you would think that I'd disagree with you but I don't. I was always careful to dress as flattering as possible, though at a certain point not very much in the way of casual clothes is flattering. Why do so many fat people put themselves at a further disadvantage? It's hard enough to get people to look past your size and see the person you are. I don't think they really do feel comfortable. Ever notice how often they are picking and pulling at their clothes? I think some people wear these things because they have no clue how bad they look. It might be denial that they've actually gotten that big or perhaps their friends/family, trying not to be mean (or maybe the opposite) tell them they look OK because they think they have to, for whatever reason (maybe they think that person would look crappy no matter what and they don't want to hurt them) Large women can look great and sexy, why would they want to wear something that looks so bad? Why don't they do themselves a favour? When you look good, you feel good. I have also lost a fair amount of weight but like someone else said, the damage is done. I started wearing shorts for the first time just a few years ago. My legs aren't attractive (AT ALL) but I'm cooler in shorts and my legs don't rub any more so why not? I am finally comfortable in my less-than-perfect-40-year-old body and I don't care that shorts don't look great. Having said that, it would be ridiculous and degrading to myself to wear tiny but-cheek, hipsters with a shorty shirt. I agree that the picture of that fat chick with the thong is not funny. It's pathetic. No it's not good for her that she wears a thong. She looks disgusting. Period. Someone may still love her, but you won't convince me that anyone would look at that and feel proud that she's their SO.
