So is this me being paranoid?

Recommended Posts

Or is this just not taking chances?

I drove to work today, which happens to be downtown Chicago. That means that my van is in a parking garage.

There was no way in hell i was leaving my rig, unattended in a non-secure garage. So I hauled it into the office with me.

So am i being paranoid or just smart?

Oh and is it 3:15pm central yet?

Not at all. I wouldn't leave my weapon in a car all day and neither would I leave my rig. That's just smart. If someone steals your car it kinda sucks but you can go to a dealer the same day and replace it if you need to. Can't really do that with a rig. It could take months to get replacements and it's still not "the same."

It depends on weather the rig was in view, or not.

If you've got a solid trunk (aka, not a hatchback or wagon) or got a cargo cover, I would have absolutely not trouble leaving anything of value in my car in downtown Chicago. I live in downtown Chicago.

I've left my rig, all my camera gear, plus countless other expensive things under the cargo cover in my car, many times.

I've parked my car in downtown Chicago for 4 years now, and never had it broken in to. I do make sure to keep anything of value out of sight, though.

Strangely, on my last visit to New York City, my car got broken into the first night it was there.

Heh nope...its a mini van, have all the seats pulled out and an airmattress in the back....

Not taking a chance....with the rig anyway.

I guess the one exception to my rule is that Chicago seems to have valet parking everywhere, which is just a pain in the ass. I HATE valet parking.

I wouldn't do valet parking with expensive stuff in my trunk, since I drive an SUV there's no way to lock out the trunk from the valet key.

Self-park though - all the time.

I've got no comment. ;)

My car has been broken into. My rig is worth more than my previous car. :D

In Florida, on rental cars they used to start the license plates with a "Z". The criminals called it "Zeeing" when they went out looking for people to rob. If they were identified, they figured that the person won't come back from Canada to testify.

Tourists were easy targets and probably not armed like the locals (Miami joke). ;)

Not at all. I do the same thing. Of course, where I work, the auto-theft rate is really really bad - something like 1 in every 50 registered vehicles is stolen around here.
I usually stop by the security desk with it on my shoulder and innocently ask if they can get me onto the roof too. (No really, I do)
