Do You Drink the Evening Before Skydiving?

Recommended Posts

Firstly, I've only been jumping about 4 months. While I was doing AFF I made sure I didnt even go out the night before jumping. Since then, I've made the decision not to jump after drinking a lot at the dz the night before, but I've also done the opposite.

I had my first chop about 2 weeks ago, that was the saturday, I went out saturday night, got sufficiently drunk, had 4 hours sleep, and was back jumping Sunday morning. Pretty stupid thing to do when you look at my experience level, but I wont be doing it again anytime soon, and the jumps I did on the sunday were my best 2 landings yet! It all came down to luck though - it could have got ugly.

Good God, MAN! i have to agree with Ed on this one. let it go. doing the right thing is a personal responsibility. no one needs to tell you to drink or not to. decide for yourself what and how much you can handle... just like YOU decide what kind and how small of a canopy you will jump. there are a lot more people out there that'll get hurt or hurt someone else from downsizing against better judgment than there are due to alcohol. if you can't handle it don't do it. if you fuck up, deal with it.

oh yah, by the way... you "old timers" should know that things aren't half as bad as they once were... i recall a time when doing just about anything while drinking was almost the norm. i.e. beer at lunch in "The Army".

I've found skydiving to be the best hangover cure on the planet! even if alkaseltzer and coffee don't fix it skydiving will for a short amount of time. usually about 15 minutes for me.Pack quick!;)

Nothing snaps you out of it like tumbling out the door at 13,000. Of course I haven't done THAT (hung over, that is) in 24 years. But I remember guys hurling out the door onto the runway on takeoff. That was hardcore.

Jump safely, how do we know? No one knows for sure, we are not bloodhounds,

Very true. You never know....
My point is if you suspect someone has been drinking heavily and you do NOT care to jump with them DONT. Get on another load.
Same goes for any other type of drug that you cant smell on them.

You smell like booze or whatever you will not get on our aircraft.

Personally I do not get drunk or hung over before a day of jumping.
Jumping is what I do for a living.

The only thing DZ's can do is to look, listen, and smell.

The DZ's can do anything they want, it's theirs.
Regardless of seeing that they may be hung over or still drunk, someone thats a danger to other jumpers shouldn't be on any DZ.

The rest of you post is correct.

Thanks, and jump safely....;)
