ChasingBlueSky 0 #1 August 5, 2004 Got home last night and my roommate was playing Doom 3. I finally got a chance to test it out as well. I think it was really worth the wait - at least the bit I have seen so far....and he is only running it on his midrange system until his x800xt shows up. Any one else?_________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again..... Sinkster 0 #3 August 5, 2004 ya it's hella fun. the hellspawn demons totally freak u out. only thing as scary (actually scarier) i played was aliens vs predator 2 as the marine, the suspense and ferocity and deadliness of the enemies was better. 1 alien getting too close would fuk u up bad (acid blood) and they were super fast. plus a face hugger would insta-kill u if u didnt see it in time. and it was dark and u had to use a light like doom. doom 3 is easier so far but an awesome game. i like how u have to use the flashlight and u cant use it at the same time as another weapon, although some people don;t like that. regardless, the doom 3 engine is going to make some very sweet games. im hoping for aliens vs predator 3 :)
MarkM 0 #4 August 5, 2004 Didn't really care much for Doom 3. After awhile it sort of got to be: "Oh look, an empty room. Look ma, I'm stepping inside. Ohhh aaahhh, the lights went out. Jeez, I hope some mean old monster don't pop out of that wall that's behind me... again... for the 100th time..." It's like Halloween 1 - 12 movies. At first it's scary, then it's sort of a running gag because it's so predictable.
Cornholio 0 #5 August 5, 2004 Oh hell yeah!! I managed to get my hands on a copy a few days ago and have been playing every day. It's some scary ass shit sometimes. I swear I jumped out of my seat a few times. I'm in the process of setting up a server too, so we'll have to play dz.com doom3 :) Butthead: Whoa! Burritos for breakfast! Beavis: Yeah! Yeah! Cool! bellyflier on the dz.com hybrid record jump
ChasingBlueSky 0 #6 August 5, 2004 Gotta love Super Duck Puncher 3! The graphics were classic! I didn't like the flashlight at first, but now I find it adds to the game. My initial impression was just ok - there was a lot of stuff I had already seen. But I just got done playing two more hours and I can admit I am loving it, and it scared me a few times. Those freaky voices in surround sound get me every time! Oh yea, I tried putting in "idkfa" and "idspispoid" and it told me I had a good memory lol_________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... billvon 3,107 #9 August 7, 2004 Yep. My formerly impressive computer is running Doom 3 at about one frame a second. So what's the "ideal" machine to run this on? GeForce 6800/Athlon 3400?
ChasingBlueSky 0 #10 August 7, 2004 From everything I have read, the video card has the largest impact on this game. They mention an Athlon 1200 or 1.2 Pentium as the slowest CPU. The better the video card, the less work the CPU will need to do (the cpu is doing all the sound processing on this game). I've been playing this on an Athlon64 but the video card is only a G3Ti4600 and it runs like a dream at 800x600. This game will work better on Nvidia cards for the moment until ATI works out some driver issues. Half Life 2 is said to work 30% better on ATI cards out of the box. Once I get my gaming system repaired, I will see how it runs on my Athlon 2100 with a Ti4200. The game is good and it reminds me a lot of older FPS shooter games, but the AI in this game is lacking. However, it has yet to stop getting me to jump....there hasn't been a game that has ever done that to me this many times. I'm loving it._________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again..... base698 20 #11 August 7, 2004 I've been playing it on an internet cafe computer. It runs about 30 fps, which is playable. I'm on the end of the delta labs I think.
Zennie 0 #12 August 7, 2004 QuoteNO, but my friends are Leaving me all bored like this Geee... who could THAT be? I'm enjoying the game quite a bit... much to Brit's dismay, but at least I can walk away from it, unlike the MMORPGs. The baddies are a LOT faster... and you really have to manage ammo. To tell you the truth, it looks like Id went with the Half-Life formula... FPS with a plot. My fave weapon so far? Chainsaw, bar none. I cleared a level in no time with just the chainsaw and barely took any damage. That might change when I get the BFG. BTW. For those of you who have gotten to the satellite transmission room, do you have any idea as to whether the choice you make makes any difference in gameplay? Looks like no matter which one you choose, someone gets pissed. - Z "Always be yourself... unless you suck." - Joss Whedon

Sinkster 0 #14 August 8, 2004 Here is a doom 3 hardware guide: http://www2.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NjQ0 The end has some recommendations for the 'ultimate' system which is like a athlon 64 and some high end nvidia card.
Sinkster 0 #15 August 8, 2004 Yeah, I agree the chainsaw totally owns. I'm an ammo miser so it's nice to be able to kill things and keep my ammo maxed out a lot easier. The cacodemons really go down easy with it if u do it right. Just have to hide and dodge until they get close then run in real quick. The only things I can't chainsaw reliably are pinky demons, spiders, revenants, flying skulls & babies, z-spec, chaingun zombies, and of course bosses like mancubi. Everything else gets the beavertooth. Ironically, I'm running out of ammo for the basic handgun from using it so much, there are not many drops for it and it's awesome against those flying skulls and destroying barrels. (but I have tons of rockets, grenades, plasma, and chaingun bullets to save for when I REALLY need them. Never underestimate what you can kill with just the basic shotgun, machine gun, and hand gun. About the satellite transmission I don't think it matters aside from a difference in a few dialogs. Either way, the plot still ends up the same. Cais 0 #16 August 8, 2004 QuoteTo tell you the truth, it looks like Id went with the Half-Life formula... FPS with a plot. That's actually the Marathon formula My computer won't ever run it, so I'm probably never gonna play it. Zennie 0 #20 August 9, 2004 I just went through the teleporter. I'm PISSED that I couldn't get at that BFG in the one guy's office. - Z "Always be yourself... unless you suck." - Joss Whedon
Cornholio 0 #21 August 9, 2004 I'm on communication tower level. Just got there, so not sure how many more levels there are this. Server has the game files now, just need to find time (between playing ) to set it up. I haven't even tried the MP yet. Might help if I actually go out and buy a valid copy of the game first. Yes, I plan to. This is an awesome game and id deserves my money, although the last time I went to Fry's on Aug 3rd, they didn't have it in stock yet. Maybe this week. Oh wait.. I leave for Rantoul on Thursday so maybe the week after. Butthead: Whoa! Burritos for breakfast! Beavis: Yeah! Yeah!
