A BAD DAY:( There goes my Jump $!!!

Recommended Posts

Friday the 13th didn't "get"me, but Sat. the 14th did!

Just found out my now very DEAD CAR needs an new ALTERNATOR! *DEEP SIGH* Luckily, I DO have the $ for that, but not for my Sunday IAF jumps, NOW.

Scheduled for 1 (hoped 2) IAFS tomorrow. NOW what am I gonna do? There's lots that I need to learn, packing, right?, and help "catch" tandems... And could just hang out and have fun anyways at the DZ...

BUT I am disappointed that I don't have the money to jump NOW like I had planned. [:/]

GOT SOME GOOD VIBES and/or TIPS FOR ME????
THANX - LILA.

That sucks :( I am kinda in the same boat however it is me forcing myself not to jump. Now that I am off student status I don't want to jump til I get my own rig. To me it just isn't worth 20$ a jump to rent gear, that will buy a rig in a hurry.

Greenie in training.

Was way out in the boonies housesitting at my brother's farm when it died.

...So I called the nearest neighbor. The dude came right over with his teenaged kids in his big ol' truck. jActually had me call Autozone, went and picked up the part and fixed it for me too! Only charged me for the $75.00 alternator, too!
Now how COOLB| is that?!

I'm a happy girl, now...
To think, JUST HOW MUCH that've cost at garage if I'd broke down in town or somewhere else?? WOW.

:)

Alternators are EASY to replace. Even if you're not mechanical at all. On most cars/trucks it's usually two or three bolts at the most, and you just have to plug the wire harness back into the new one, and put the belt back on. Shouldn't cost you too much at Autozone or a place like that. (Napa has the best parts, but also the highest prices. True testament to you get what you pay for.) But you should be able to save yourself some money if you do it yourself. If you decide to do it, and you get stuck, feel free to contact me and I'll try to help you with it.
For $20 I'll call the guy a CHICKENFUCKER!

(Napa has the best parts

not really true. I had a Pep Boys alternator in my car for 150,000 miles. It quit working, and I didn't remember even changing the alternator, let alone where it came from. I went to Discount fully expecting to pay 100 bucks for a new one. The fellow at Discount recognized it as a warranteed part from Pep Boys, and was good enough to let me know that I could get it for free. PepBoys replaced it no problem.
I went one morning to Napa. They charged me $20 for a brake light switch.
I REPEAT $20.
This part runs about $6 everywhere else but Napa.
It was very early and nothing else was open. When I asked why it was so expensive I was told " It's Napa gold, you'll never have to replace that part!".
Amazingly enough, I'd never had to replace a brake light switch in the last 5 years on that vehicle, and who knows how long before I had the truck. It was bullshit, I was pretty pissed.

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes!

Dude/Dudette......Rephrasing your statement about Alt's. being easy to replace would be a wise thing...I agree that many are quite easy to replace with little mechanical aptitude and a small selection of hand tools.....However!!!!.....there are also many vehicles out there where I would dare you to even touch one...let alone replace one......ever change a Alt. on a 3.4l Lumina?(there are many other examples)

I have a class A Interprovincal Journeymans Lic. and am a ASE Master Tech and ASE Advanced Engine performance specialist with 15 years in the trade.

Cheap advice is generally cheap for a reason ;):P

Glad you got your car fixed on the cheap girl!! always nice to have a neighbour go out of there way to help....Leme guess....you drive a GM product?.....AC Delco Alt's are crap and go quite often..... and on most of there vehicles...are quite easy to change.

A typical charge for your prob would be ...Tow bill($??) Diagnose..(.5 hour) Replace Part..(1.0 hour-on average for a GM) Parts ($75-that would be a cheaper Alt with less warranty) + Taxes.

The national company I work for reciently(spel) closed our parts depots and switched to Napa....there markup is brutal!!!!!!!!...similar to a jewelry stores:S.....

Most aftermarket parts and reman parts come from the same companies that supply all jobbers/wholesales/retailers in a area.....differances in prices from ...lets say napa and pepboys... is usually there markup and how they honor there warranties.....I've gotten the same part(identical) from 2 different retailers ...with a 100% differance in retail price and a identical warranty:S

I must digress:$...I cant rant for hours on this shit:$

Hey thanx for the heads up, Will. Got it taken care of by that neighbor.

But at the dz when I talked about it with other students, the guys said pretty much the same thing about how it's simple to replace in MOST cars.

Guess I need to get a manual for my ol' 92 Buick Century (4 cycl) to attempt to fix what I can, myself, in the future....

...OH NO! I'VE GOT NOT TOOLS!
:$it's always somethin'! - LILA.
