Tekla 0 #1 August 16, 2004 I'm looking for a new monster PC. Rather than list specifications let's just say that I want something that can run Doom 3 without breaking a sweat, and can handle multi-meda stuff too. I know of Alienware and Demonite. Any suggestions or recommended manufacturers from from you lot ? Lu-"let the beast beware"-cy .
larsrulz 0 #2 August 16, 2004 Make your own. You can make a computer on-spec with Alienware for about half the cost. IMHO, buy a dell. They have sales once a month where their PCs are almost exactly what you would pay for the components separately, mainly because they can get the OS for about 1/10 the price you pay. I have a 2.8GHz, 1 GB RAM, and a 9800 video card and my computer can fold in the background without a bit of trouble. Doom 3 specs are only a problem for people with 2 year old computers. Anything over 2GHz will be fine as long as you have a nice video card. I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
CrazyIvan 0 #3 August 16, 2004 Well, systems like Alienware and such are EXPENSIVE and just because, now, you could ask a geeky friend to build you a custom extreme-monster and save some money.__________________________________________ Blue Skies and May the Force be with you. adamjenner 0 #4 August 16, 2004 doom 3 you need....1.5GHz processor or faster tons of ram (get about 500mb) geforce 4 3d card or a radeon series video card (made with ATI technology) so on and so forth. just get a nice video card and a fast processor with some ram and things should go fine. right now all i have is an AMD 1.6Ghz processor, Radeon 9200 video card, 512 ram, AvRack sound card and doom 3 runs perfectly on here. You don't need the latest and greatest for Doom3 to run smoothly. Runs smoothly on my Athlon 2100 (1.7GHz), a gig of RAM ( 500MB is a moderate amount of RAM) and ATI Radeon 9800 XT. Chivo 0 #10 August 16, 2004 I got an Alienware and it is an awesome machine. But like mentioned before, it is VERY expensive. A good alternative is to build it yourself (or find a friend that can). As for what machine, depends on many things, but if you want to play doom3, make sure you get a good video card... Since Nvidia is the card for Doom3, you can play it with a geforce 6600 and 6600gt (currently in pci express, will be agp later this month), or preferably with a geforce 6800 - but more expensive. You can even do SLI with 2 - 6600's (pci) and get aprox the same performance as one 6800. Anyway, you can check a few articles with more info... like The Official Doom3 HW Guide, and Tom's Hardware Guide: Matching Doom III With The Best Graphics Card, and then maybe How does CPU Speed Impact Graphics Performance?, and Battle 4: AMD vs. Intel. Yeah, yeah, I've been doing a little research cuz I want to upgrade my system too. Hope this helps. ~Chivo
