markd_nscr986 0 #51 July 23, 2004 I always carried a hook knife on every jump......probably not from any superstitious inclinations but more to keep the CRW people away(get away from me with that canopy,I have a hook knife and will not hesitate to use it)Marc SCR 6046 SCS 3004

goose491 0 #53 July 23, 2004 It's a good thing this was moved to the Bonfire. To All, Last night I had a dream. A solo sit jump which seemed to be entirely in slow-mo. It was an uneventful freefall. I didn't really do anything but fall down the pipe in a sit. Felt rocket fast and slug slow all at the same time. I could see from mine own eyes and I could see myself in flight simultaneously. Not once did I check the alti. The ditter never went. But to my belly I go. We both knew it was pull time and slowly my hand reaches back and closes over the hackey. "Was that a lazy pull or is it just the slow-mo?"... "What slow-mo? We're going rocket fast still"! WhaBam!! It definitely was slow-mo because it's fast now. Spinning mal and I'm on my back. Spinning so hard that I feel the blood in my toes... I can't lift my hands from my sides... I feel the blood in my fingers too! How am I going to cut away and go Silver? "I should have listened to that fortune cookie!" I think to myself. "Idiot! Seconds left and you're thinking of the Chinese! F*ckin' save yourself!" I answer. And with that, Slow-mo returns. I look up and see my canopy for the first time. It's a ball of crap. I look down to find my handles and miraculously, my hands are already on them. Actually, the cutaway is already being punched. I am thrown horizontally and flipped onto my belly. The ground is CLOSE! I pull silver. Ahhhhhh, pretty white Parachute. This is the first moment I am experiencing things in real time. There is no time for toggles, no time for flare, the ground is here... but it's a soft landing just the same... I am laying on my back looking through my reserve straight at the sun. What's that little dark dot? The canopy falls gently behind me and reveals a tiny little strip of paper drifting down behind it. My fortune!!! From my reserve flap!!! It lands right between my legs. I hear laughter... mine. I hear others laugh too. "Won't be hard to find the freebag!" I turn around and a friend is standing but 40 feet away with it draped over his head. "That was no thing!" Dreams are funny things. The hibegeebees are a gone. I'm looking forward to first load Saturday morning. My Karma ran over my Dogma!!!
grue 1 #54 July 24, 2004 Hockey: My goalie pads must always go on in the same order. If I can't remember, I take 'em off and start oever. I will not skate over the red line. I step over it. Soccer: Same undershirt under my keeper jersey, every game. Dangerous sports (cliff diving, SCUBA, and now skydiving): I never check my mail the day before, or the day of, participation. I don't know where I got this one, I just started doing it. cavete terrae.
mjosparky 4 #55 July 24, 2004 QuoteOne ritual I do consistently is blowing kisses. This, to me, signifies affection and/or respect. With regard to skydiving, right after opening, after I've unstowed brakes and done a control check, I blow a kiss to each of my bare feet (my landing gear and a symbolic sense of my freedom in the sky), to the sky itself, and to my canopy. I don't know why I first did it, during AFP, (perhaps because I was glad to have a canopy inflated overhead and knew I was gonna live!) but it's stuck with me ever since. You got any more of that shit you want to seel? It must be killer stuff. SparkyMy idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
peacefuljeffrey 0 #56 July 24, 2004 QuoteQuoteI didn't find a poll answer to suit me. I don't consider myself superstitious, really, but I do get sort of "ritualistic" at some things... With regard to skydiving, right after opening, after I've unstowed brakes and done a control check, I blow a kiss to each of my bare feet (my landing gear and a symbolic sense of my freedom in the sky), to the sky itself, and to my canopy. I think your vote would then be: Superstition does not apply to my life *except* for in the sport. You may not think something specific will go wrong if you don't blow those kisses... but I'd bet you feel strange if you forget to? Well, I still think of it more as a "ritual," and I would not be surprised if some day I come to realize that I have been not doing it for a long while. Besides, I do it after I have a good canopy! Unless you're talking about landing problems, or problems on the next jump... If I forgot to, I'd probably just mentally do it on the ground, and will that to "make up for it." --Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... Hard line, hard line after hard line!" PLFXpert 0 #60 August 13, 2004 Quote“In this sport, you can do everything right and still die.” First, that is true with anything in life. I can follow all the driver's ed rules and still die in a car accident. It's all about the silly "but, what if" game. I don't ever worry about the "what if's" unless there's a valid reason to. I wouldn't say I am either, or. It's Friday the 13th, today, so of course if something bad happens, I will joke it was b/c it's Friday the 13th. I still knock on wood, all the time, even though I really dont' think it makes a difference. But, black cats are still cute as hell to me, and I've broken several mirrors in my time. If there's bad luck involved, it wasn't all that bad. Karma, is a bit of a superstition, yet I still say, "what goes around, comes around" even though I think I get jipped in that arena. Again, I must say, if it can't hurt, why not? Knock on wood all you want. I will. Why not?Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.

linny 1 #62 August 13, 2004 Hey Goose, The story of your extremely vivid dream and subsequent cutaway is proof of what I always talk about. I think our minds are capable of manifesting actions, especially when we least expect them too. My friend AND I had similiar circumstances minus the vivid dream. When I first started I was obsessed with mal's and incidents......... had to know everything about them, read every death report. Then the day after I spent a few hours on the BASE fatality board I had my first cut away (at jump 16). A few weeks later my friend said "lets go CUTAWAY!" as we walked out of Square One...... the very next jump was her first cut away (her jump #26). Weird coincidences.?? nah. Our minds are more powerful than we could ever imagine. Am I superstitious? no. But I'm sure as shit mindful and careful of my thoughts and words when it comes to skydiving now though!!!
