ladyskydiver 0 #1 August 17, 2004 Ok...what the heck is this?!?! I go to a Mexican restaurant and am looking forward to homemade tamales. I order them...anxiously looking forward to enjoying some awesome tamales, and what happens?!?! The waiter comes back and tells me they do not have any tamales! WTF?!?! NO TAMALES?!?! ARG!!! Anyone have a suggestion about where to get some real, authentic tamales here in NYC?Life is short! Break the rules! Forgive quickly! Kiss slowly! Love truly, Laugh uncontrollably. AggieDave 6 #5 August 17, 2004 Its easy, drive to Texas. Enjoy the food, enjoy the cool DZs and the cool people. Drive back later.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
PhillyKev 0 #6 August 17, 2004 That's a good plan except for that one major draw back. I'd have to go to Texas. And after that drive I mentioned in the thread about things to do in New Mexico, where I drove across TX and went 12 hours without even seeing a rock or a cactus, just flat sand, decided I'd never set foot there again

AggieDave 6 #8 August 17, 2004 Ah, you went to the fucked up part of TX, the panhandle. I'm not a fan of that region either, I like North Central, central and south central TX. Basically from north of Dallas to Houston, the I-35/I-45 region.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
tigra 0 #9 August 17, 2004 Sorry Cora, You won't find too much genuine Mexican food in New York. We need to send up tortillas and chorizo to my guy's daughter who is going to school in Queens! And when she's home, she makes her mom cook for her every day!
diablopilot 2 #10 August 17, 2004 Too funny. I recomend NOT looking for REAL mexican food in Rantoul IL either. Right GFD? ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.
racer42 0 #11 August 17, 2004 It is a well known fact that Mexican food as we know it in America, does not truly exist outside of the San Antonio City Limits. Yes, that includes outside BOTH loops. Also, no self respecting Mexican restaurant here is open after 3pmL.A.S.T. #24 Co-Founder Biscuit Brothers Freefly Team Electric Toaster #3 Co-Founder Team Non Sequitor Co-Founder Team Happy Sock

NYCFreeFall 0 #18 August 17, 2004 Tons of good authentic mexican food in NYC: Zarela - 2nd ave and 52nd or 53rd Rosa Mexicana - 1st Ave and 58th Check out www.newyork.citysearch.com - their reviews are usually pretty good. I use citysearch or zagats when looking for ideas.

Daizey 0 #20 August 17, 2004 If you look hard enough you will find verrry good mexican food. Especially in Greenwich village. For the most part many of the places you will find are good, but one particular one that I have come across, Tio Pepe Restaurant, was probably the best. If you get there late (like after midnight) the service isnt always the best, but the food rocks...I would say it may be the most authentic mexican food you can find in the Manhattan...everything is soo fresh and delicious! its between 6th and 7th ave on west 4th street. (greenwich village) The resturant itslef is so pretty too...if you go into the back theres this huge covered garden..they're open pretty late to (we've hit it as late as 2am and there was stilll a big crowd) Thats the best in terms of food....if you want the best in terms of tequila or margaritas...let me know, cause I know of a few good ones Hope that helps! *daizey*
happythoughts 0 #21 August 17, 2004 Simple tests for a true Mexican restaurant. 1. There should be no English language songs on the jukebox except for selected Brittany Spears songs. 2. 90% of the customers should be wearing silver-tipped roach-killers. 3. Conversation should stop for a moment when a non-Hispanic person enters while they are evaluated.
