Jimbo 0 #1 August 18, 2004 The recent release of Doom III has me thinking it's probably time to chuck my generic 64MB video card and get something a little more, uh, modern. The question is, what? I'm not too keen on dropping $400+ on a video card, but I do want something that can/will play the games of today in a mode that doesn't suck. What fits the bill? Thanks, Jim"Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.
CrazyIvan 0 #2 August 18, 2004 You could get an ATI 9200 (PCI 128 MB) for about $99 (on sale), it handles Doom III, it won't handle the ULTRA SUPER DUPER HIGH RESOLUTION, but you can play it on medium or low resolution, still looks good.__________________________________________ Blue Skies and May the Force be with you. FrogNog 1 #3 August 18, 2004 Ivan is right. For $100 to $200, if you know what to get, you can get good Doom 3 video. I'd recommend another $50 on a little surround sound system, too. I forget which one my friend got but it has been excellent at scaring the piss out of us in that game.
Sinkster 0 #4 August 18, 2004 Get this --> Nvidia GeForce 6600 GT, it just came out, BEST for the money for sure. WAY better than the previously mentioned card and only 150-200$ or so. "With a suggested street price of US$199, the 6600 GT runs at a steady 42 FPS in Doom 3, at high-quality 1600*1200." (probably had fast cpu and lots of ram, but still!!!!) "GeForce 6600 GT cards come with a 500 MHz clock and memory rate, 128-bit (GDDR3, 128 MB) and will cost $200-230, GeForce 6600 with 128-bit bus (GDDR, 128 MB) will cost $150. According to preliminary results and unconfirmed tests GeForce 6600 GT performs 20% better than RADEON 9800XT. "
PhillyKev 0 #5 August 18, 2004 Don't bother with a super duper cool video card with some ridiculously high FPS rate. Most computers can't handle the FPS that the video cards are putting out anyway. Oh, and the best way to get good fluid motion is to set the FPS on the card to a multiple of the refresh rate of your monitor. And using a TFT or other progressive display is the equivalent as having twice as many FPS.
adamjenner 0 #6 August 18, 2004 i picked up a radeon 9200 (128mb) for $80 and it's one of the recommended cards you use.
