Dagny 0 #84 August 22, 2004 QuoteThe victory was Phelps' fourth individual gold in Athens, matching Mark Spitz's total at the 1972 Games in Munich. (Australian woman Shane Gould is the only swimmer to win five individual medals at the same Games, also in 1972.) Phelps also became the third man to sweep both butterflies in a single Games. And he is the ninth athlete to win at least five golds at a single Games Phelps is an amazing athlete. The only one who choked here was me...on my diet sunkist while reading your post. Read Phelps' biography and I think you'll see that his talent and his performance at the games has been nothing short of awe-inspiring. I agree that Spitz was one of the best swimmers that the Olympics has seen. However, exceeding his record does not make a great athlete. Phelps is not a braggart (like Gary Hall, talented...but dear god, that ego), he is still very a very young competitor, but he has an enormous talent. And, his stepping aside from the 18th race to allow his teammate an opportunity to earn his first gold speaks volumes for Phelps. You don't have to like him, but give credit where it's due.Take me, I am the drug; take me, I am hallucinogenic. -Salvador Dali
Squeak 17 #85 August 22, 2004 QuoteThorpe's also in his prime. They're very comparable swimmers. (Read: significantly better than the rest of the world) Kelly Umm what make you think Ian Thorpe has reached jis prime, he is only JUST 21 I would not write him off just yet You lot should see yourselves from an outsiders point of few, you're funny You are not now, nor will you ever be, good enough to not die in this sport (Sparky) My Life ROCKS! MyOwnWay 0 #86 August 22, 2004 i am only watching it cuz there is nothing else on tv. i only get the 5 local channels i would rather be there and watch in person. . . don't really care for watching sports on tv. it doesn't have the same excitement._________________________________________ all good things are wild and free - Henry David Thoreau
FlyingJ 0 #87 August 22, 2004 Quotei would rather be there and watch in person. . . don't really care for watching sports on tv. it doesn't have the same excitement. I agree to a degree but I think it depends on the sport. During the Atlanta Games I went to see Track & Field, swimming and beach volleyball. The swimming and volleyball were great, easy to follow, etc., but I found the track and field miserable to try and figure out what was going on. You just don't realize how much is all going on at once, and how far away it can be! That said, if someone offered me a plane ticket and tickets to track and field in Greece I'd be there in a heartbeat!!!Killing threads since 2004. kelel01 1 #88 August 23, 2004 You know, I honestly thought Ian Thorpe was older than that . . . are you sure he's just 21?
Lainey 0 #89 August 23, 2004 Yep, he's only 21. He's been in the Australian swimming team since 1997 when he was just 14 years old. Evelyn 0 #90 August 23, 2004 I stayed at the IHOP in Perris this past week during the 4 way/tunnel camp and the TV there gets only one channel, the channel with the Olympics, so if we wanted to watch TV we had to watch the Olympics. kelel01 1 #91 August 23, 2004 Oh, I really thought he was 23, and 4 years can make a big difference . . . and Ian Thorpe admittedly kicks ASS in freestyle, even if he was 48.

Choking is doing way less than you are capable of when the pressure is on. My hat's off to him for getting in the pool to take on the best and then doing his personal best in that event.-- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

Zenister 0 #94 August 23, 2004 are you positve they were using 2004 seconds instead of 1972 seconds? I'm sure if you factored the way time is measured today vs the way time was measured in 1972 you'd see Sptiz was still a muuuch better swimmer than Phelps....____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed. CanuckInUSA 0 #95 August 24, 2004 QuoteI'm just curious as to how all of you would improve the coverage of the Olympics Include more coverage of the womens beach volleyball tournament. Well actually they did include plenty of coverage here, it's just that I can't get enough of a good thing. I just finished watching May/Walsh beat McPeak/Youngs in the semis and I saw May/Walsh beat a Canadian team last night. The Canadians actually were closer to beating May/Walsh than McPeak/Youngs were. But who knows? Maybe May/Walsh were off last night (despite winning) and were on today. Either way, I have a new favorite Olympics sport to watch. Womens beach volleyball!!! The men are faster and more powerful, but the women tend to rally longer. Just as in tennis, I find watching womens tennis better then men despite the fact that the men are stronger and faster. The rallies are just better in the womens game and thus the matches are more fun to watch. Or maybe I just like watching athletic women roll around in the sand. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
